Re: Eggs without shells???? Help please
Well, I haven't given the egg shells back to the hens, but I do dry them out and crush them to put around the vegetables to stop the slugs eating my seedlings - works a treat!

Chicken vet
I'm sorry to hear about the problems you've had. However I have to agree - bumblefoot can be a nightmare. Treatment really depends on how quickly you catch it and what caused it. If caught early on then the problems can be minimised. If there is a lot of inflammation, infection or scar tissue then i...

Breeding turkeys
This may be a strange question for this time of year, but I'm trying to plan ahead!!! We got 2 pairs of turkeys over a year ago - one pair of Bourbon Reds and one pair of Crolwitzer (sorry if the spelling is wrong), with the hope of breeding turkeys last year. We got a fair number of eggs from them ...

Re: Chicken vet
Thanks for the link. We're trying to expand the smallholding side of the vet practice - after all this is my first love! So far I've operated on chickens - mainly fixing wounds, treated prolapses, foot problems and feather / skin problems. Have a look at http://www.theveterinarysmallholder.com/ for ...

Re: cat antiseptic
Hi,
The simplest thing to use is salty water - teaspoon of salt in a pint of boiled and then cooled water. This avoids any possible problems with phenols (TCP) and essential oils, which could pose a problem if the cat licked them.

Re: Chicken vet
Hi Richard, How are things going? I was at Stirling poultry sale on Saturday and bought some more chickens!!!!! A trio of Marans and some quail - it is becoming an obsession....... My daughter fell in love with a Poland cockerel and was most upset when we didn't get him - maybe next time. All the be...

Chicken vet
Hi everyone, After 15 years of being a vet in other practices I've gone and set up my own practice. I don't claim to be an expert when it comes to chickens, but will claim to be very enthusiastic about them, after keeping a variety on the smallholding for the past 4 years. We've got a light sussex c...

Re: best veg for polytunnel
http://sheepandchickens.googlepages.com/SS100664.JPG/SS100664-full;init:.JPG I would have to agree that courgettes grow well in the polytunnel. This was also the first year for my polytunnel and I think I got a littel carried away and planted too much! But never mind, it was also experimentation - ...

Re: Cauliflowers
Thanks everyone. I grew the cauliflowers on in plugs, hardened them off then planted them out. Thought they had enough room, but it is very windy, so maybe they're rocking??? Who knows!!

Light Sussex chickens for sale Perthshire
We've got some 8 - 18 week old Light Sussex chickens for sale. Unfortunately though I'm not very good at telling male and female apart - we think there are 2 males and 2 females in the older group (thanks to Self Sufficientish supporters for that!) but have no idea about the younger ones. If anyone ...

Cauliflowers
Can anyone help with growing cauliflowers. This is the 3rd year that I have tried and yet again I seem to be growing what I call 'blind' cauliflowers - just a load of really healthy looking green leaves and no white cauliflower bit in the middle. It doesn't happen to all of them, but more than half ...

Hi, Yes you do need to get a holding number - contact your local Animal Health office. They are usually really nice and helpful. I agree that the DEFRA website is dire! It's usually quicker just to phone them up. They will give you a holding number for the land, and a flock number if you are going t...
I agree that if she is still like this for a couple of days then the vet needs to have a look. A few of mine have the runs at the moment - think it's the fresh grass growth. We checked them for worm eggs and they were fine. So far they have cleared up quite quickly. The main think to watch for thoug...
