Re: Link a stove to the radiators without a back boiler

I think we have what they might be talking about. Our stove has a rectangular "tank" only about 5cm deep but with an area that covers the entire back of the fire box. Without checking, this I estimate has a volume of about 10 litres and acts as the primary heat exchanger. From here, the ho...

Re: Cooking an old hen

How long did you leave between slaughter & cooking? An old chicken will benefit from being allowed to mature a while to allow for a bit of tenderising. For one that old, I'd store it for about four days in the warmest part of the fridge before attempting to cook it and even then I'd marinade for...

Re: Cooking in a wood-burning stove

We cook using ours a lot during the winter (especially on days like to today when our electricity package means if we used the oven we'd pay 51 cents per kWh  ). Learning to cook bread in it took time, but I'm getting good results now. The very best thing on it, though, is omelettes. I don't ...

I'm going along with the game idea. Proper game (not the farmed stuff) is very high in all kinds of useful stuff, including some hard-to-get fatty acids.

Re: What do you think of this?

I'm astounded that the EFSA didn't require the companies wishing to sell GMOs in Europe to make full disclosure about what had been inserted where - why did it take research to discover this? I suspect that the risks to human & plant health are probably very small, but the fact that the regulato...

Nah. I'm pretty confident that Volvo estates are still legal.

Re: 'Cry it out ' sleep training causes brain damage

It seems a very limited discussion when you take one small aspect of parenting and then polarise the argument by saying: 'one way good the other way bad'. But then we live in a society that thrives on headline neurosis. There are many variables involved with the way that people parent, and who is t...

Offcuts can be great value fuel. I'd suggest you try to avoid any treated or painted woods though.

Re: Home Schooling

This is not a generalised moan about contemporary teaching, which I reckon has improved exponentially since my brief foray into the profession. I'd agree with you. I suspect the problem is that spelling & grammar (at least in the UK) are seen as being unimportant by a very large number of people...

Re: Coconut milk as a treatment for dementia?

Ah - I see: coconut milk as a source of medium chain triglyceride. Well, MCTs help with epilepsy in some cases (established treatment since the 1920s I think) and there's anecdotal evidence that they help Alzheimer's (don't know if any peer reviewed research has been done - I'm sure it would be easy...

Re: Curious Wiring - Ideas?

It was a farm - house plus barn, which might explain why something over spec was used since there was originally a fair bit of stuff that was exposed to the elements. We know the house was rewired in 1953, which dates the current installation. The barn part is on a completely new and separate fuse b...

Bees & Pesticides

Thought this was interesting. The Vendée imposed a voluntary ban on neonicotinoid pesticide a few years back, despite being told by the agrochem industry and central government that there was no scientific justification for it, and bee numbers rocketed. http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2013/jan...

Re: Curious Wiring - Ideas?

Thanks for the reply. I've had another look at the conducting cores and they are tinned copper. So the lead sheath was an earthing system? The cabling is old, and like your place, the whole of the upstairs lighting & power sockets run off this single cable. There are fuses in the plug sockets an...

Re: Seats reserved exclusively for men in the House of Lords

Why do we have to tippee toe around religion walking on eggshells for fear of offending anyone? I have never singled anyone out calling them stupid. I'v said before it's organized religion i have a problem with, not individual people with their own personal beliefs. I think that referring to them a...
