Re: Anyone got a Dehydrator?

Still on my quest to become less and less reliant on electricity, I won't have an electric dehydratr I use a rack on top of the RAyburn, with the lid down. Metal racks, got cheaply from the tip, the best ones are the 'shelf extenders' sort fo things, sold for making an extra shelf oin the larder/cup...

Re: Rowan or Mountain Ash berries

It's the tannin on the rowans that can make them unpalatable; usually mixed with other fruits in eg hedgerow jellies, wines, etc. All varieties are safe to use; I forage wild ones, plus have two cultivars (and a wild one) in the garden, all useful. Always leave plenty for the birds though. I'm tryin...

Re: Hops

I'm picking mine this week, hoping to make a start today. I tend to cut the bines, and strip the hops at the table - less injuries that way, they're fearsome things, the bines. I pick in the middle of a dry day any day in September when they're ready. MIne go up on the washing pulley above the Raybu...

Re: Bottling pasta sauce...?

I don't know if this is a daft question or not, but when I make excess sauce I bung it in the freezer to keep rather than in bottles. What's the benefit of bottling rather than freezing - does it keep longer or is it just the reduction in freezer space required? I bottle produce because it's an ene...

Re: What to do with bee's wax

Woudl be wasted on cheese, and I'm not sure it's suitable. All sorts of homemade cosmetics have it in, but it's best for candles and bartering, I've found. Makes excellent polish, tto, nice and easy.

Re: weaving

Look online for your nearest Guild of Weavers Spinners and Dyers; go along and see how you get on, maybe join, or just find out about weaving lessons. They should also ahve various bits of equipment to hire out/loan too. Well worth joining if you have an interest in any of the fibre arts.

Re: Does anybody have a Pea Pod Wine recipe?

Ha! You know me - the proverbial bad penny............  3 1/2 bs is probably close enough - put in some older tougher runners, cut up if you want to bulk it out a bit. Otherwise, put the pods in the freezer as you shell the peas, adding to them as you go, until you have enough. Defrost be...
