Re: The Fashion for frugal blogs

That's certainly something I've tried to do in recent years. I've never been particularly fashionable - being a larger size, so for years I just bought cheap stuff because it didn't interest me much. Now I've lost a bit of weight I've started to take a bit more interest. I buy most of my clothes (pr...

Re: Being self sufficient in 2017

No, not just you Flo. We regularly laugh at our efforts to find some sensible starting point, for many of our efforts.

Re: This board ain't self sufficient

Yes, I read that. Apparently these oil traps are good because they only attract earwigs. Isn't nature wonderful.

Re: Peanuts

I haven't had tiger nuts for years. They definitely weren't green though.

Re: Peanuts

Are you going to eat some of these or save for planting next year? I'd love to know what freshly pulled peanuts taste like - no idea how old the one from shops are.
Do they need to be cooked first? I understand in peanut country in the US they boil them in the husk then suck them out.

Re: Roses from cuttings

I don't know but it sounds quite exciting - waiting to see what appears next. I think roses are usually grown on rosa rugosa stock, or something equally vigorous. The suckers, which I periodically remember to lop off would certainly suggest it. So I suppose you could just wander of to any hedgerow a...

Re: This board ain't self sufficient

Ha, knew you would. I think earwigs are particularly active where it's a bit damp so cutting the grass around the veg bed should help and maybe shift any pots etc - they like dark places to sleep. Don't get rid of them all though, they can be quite helpful eating other insects, not just your ...

Under the Choko tree

I don't know if you remember Nev Sweeney? He was the twins' "technical guru" when Ish started right back in the mists of time. Well he has his own blog titled as above and he has just started his own You Tube channel, under the same name. This is his first video and the sound quality isn't...

Re: The Fashion for frugal blogs

It is, Flo. Maybe some folk don't like the idea of self-sufficiency - sounds too difficult or something - but being frugal means they can pick areas to concentrate on. Of course they can with Ish too but maybe that isn't so immediately obvious. What makes me smile is that many of the people doing th...

Re: Ophelia

We've got one of the suitcase generators. A friend who moved away gave it to us. He rigged up a whole 12V lighting system for it but I don't remember him ever needing to use it other than to test. Very compact with enough output to keep the two big freezers and a laptop or two going, maybe a lamp - ...

Re: Chestnuts - how and when do I use them?

You can do them in the oven, or in a pan on the hob - just remember to cut that cross to stop them exploding, as Flo said. Or you can boil, skin them and then cook again in syrup - marrons glace; chop them into stuffing; make nut loaf, or anywhere you'd use other nuts really. Normally they'd be too ...
