Re: Fairly simple and quick-ish recipe for curd cheese

I've made cheese using a very similar recipe and it's lovely but it strikes me as rather involved for a fresh cheese that only keeps for a week or two at most. Then I discovered a "recipe" which is much simpler - Crowdie. Just put your milk in a thick-bottomed pan on a very low heat (I put...

Re: replace a wood-burning furnace with an aga

I can't answer that, Andy, although I'm sure someone will, but I do have one suggestion in the meantime. We replaced our solid fuel boiler a little while back and sized it in order to add a few more radiators (which we've done) and a 500l thermal store (which turned into a 350l TS because the plumbe...

Nor are any of us, Jansman, that's why we're Ish. But anything you can make, grow or do for yourself is all to the good, I think. :thumbright:

Re: Hello from Mid-Devon!

Welcome to Ish, Dave and Val.

Another early retiree here, after 30+ years in the NHS I moved, with family, to the north of Scotland.

I'm not sure why we call it retirement though. I never worked so hard as a nurse as I do at this Ish stuff.

That looks fab, Weedo, but I can see how parched it is even near the water. Enjoy your leisure.

Re: Sour Chutney?

It might take a lot longer than overnight, Lexi, so don't despair if it's still vinegary - just put it away for a while and let it do its thing. It can take from a few days to several weeks for chutneys to mature and become edible. I think that was probably the point, though. Chutneys were ways of p...

Re: Sales

Good point. Unfortunately that option isn't available to me as most of my shopping is done online. I do remember getting a free pair of binoculars chucked in when I bought a digital camera many years ago. We still have the binoculars, they're fantastic - the camera is long gone. It was 1 megapixel (...

Re: What's for the festive lunch 2017

I've just remembered I've bought a small vegan "cheese" hamper from a small Edinburgh company called Nutcrafter Creamery. Might be worth a look Flo. I've made cheeses for her in the past but it's a huge faff and they don't keep very well so I thought I'd give these a go. Not cheap but they...

Re: What's for the festive lunch 2017

Last Christmas was awful - our gal had bad tonsillitis and was really quite ill. My time was spent nursing her. I can't remember when we had our Christmas dinner but it wasn't on Christmas day for sure. So this year she's being dosed up with Vit C and zinc and we're going to push the boat out for a ...

Seed will be fine, thanks. We've had some very nice results from growing seed from shop bought toms.

Re: It's that time of year again ...

Lovely. I still haven't got round to sowing ours, so I don't think we'll be having home grown somehow . On the up side we've finished flooring the last room (in the house) so OH will be installed into his new office this weekend. Who needs tomatoes when you can have flooring tiles and paint? Me...

Re: Food waste

There's an online store - Approved Foods - which only sells after "best before" and "end of line" products. They've gone from selling a small amount, out of their spare bedroom to having a big warehouse. I have a look every now and then, you can often buy more unusual, expensive ...
