Re: Sales

I agree, it's just another marketing ploy to hook people in to buy stuff they didn't know they wanted and almost certainly don't need. I suppose if there is something you do need (say a new washing machine) and can wait until the day it might be possible to get a good saving - it doesn't really matt...

I don't think I've ever seen or tasted Blenheim Orange.

Good luck with the retirement (and moving etc of course). I'm sort of retired - never been busier.

Re: Dig the Fig - The essential guide to all you need to know about figs - Ficus carica

I don't know how you'd get them identified but I'm glad you've managed to strike the cuttings. Varieties of most fruits these days seem to be dwindling so hanging on to any older varieties is brilliant. The only ones I seem to be able to buy (as plants) are Brown Turkey and White Marseilles, neither...

Re: I'm now self sufficient in ...

Not self-sufficient exactly, but we got a couple of pumpkins from Lidl for 29p each! Nice sized ones, not too big. One of these little fellas has done us a batch of pumpkin fries for two (think oven chips without spuds  ) a Moroccan-style lamb and pumpkin stew (four portions) and I've still go...

Re: Apples in Cornwall

There are various considerations but I suppose the first one is - how much land do/will you have? Are you looking at a grafted family tree that will produce 2-3 different varieties on one dwarfing rootstock in your tiny back yard or acres of full-size trees? Pretty much any apple variety will grow w...

Hi Taff and welcome to Ish.

Apart from the Aus interlude, I suppose you're keeping the Celtic connection.

Are you looking forward to coming back?

Re: The Fashion for frugal blogs

That's certainly something I've tried to do in recent years. I've never been particularly fashionable - being a larger size, so for years I just bought cheap stuff because it didn't interest me much. Now I've lost a bit of weight I've started to take a bit more interest. I buy most of my clothes (pr...

No, not just you Flo. We regularly laugh at our efforts to find some sensible starting point, for many of our efforts.

Yes, I read that. Apparently these oil traps are good because they only attract earwigs. Isn't nature wonderful.

Re: Peanuts

Are you going to eat some of these or save for planting next year? I'd love to know what freshly pulled peanuts taste like - no idea how old the one from shops are.
Do they need to be cooked first? I understand in peanut country in the US they boil them in the husk then suck them out.

Re: Roses from cuttings

I don't know but it sounds quite exciting - waiting to see what appears next. I think roses are usually grown on rosa rugosa stock, or something equally vigorous. The suckers, which I periodically remember to lop off would certainly suggest it. So I suppose you could just wander of to any hedgerow a...

Re: This board ain't self sufficient

Ha, knew you would. I think earwigs are particularly active where it's a bit damp so cutting the grass around the veg bed should help and maybe shift any pots etc - they like dark places to sleep. Don't get rid of them all though, they can be quite helpful eating other insects, not just your ...
