Re: Hello from Meath

I've already said hello but hello again  I find th self-sufficiency thing varies by person, time and circumstances. We all find our own elements that we can enjoy doing or fit in with life's demands. But if you want to get back into it you're in the right place. Have a look around, we've got to...

Re: What's wrong with fennel?

 Welcome to Ish, dg.

Fennel's a lovely herb, sprinkle the fronds on fish or in salads. Some folks put fennel stalks in when stock making but I find it a bit too overpowering. Definitely a herb where less is more!

Rural planning handbook

I know we haven't had any threads surrounding rural building recently but saw this and thought I'd share it. At least we'll know where to find it then.

...and remove their habitat so they've nowhere to hide. I don't know how far they travel but keeping the area under the tree clear should help.

Re: Liquorice

It's apparently a sub-tropical plant, ina, so I'm guessing it'll be a houseplant where you live. You can grow it in a pot, which will restrict its growth but that's maybe not a bad thing as its roots can get to 10m deep in the ground! It likes a sunny spot, free draining compost/loam/sand mix and to...

Re: Men plucking their eyebrows!

looking like Denis Healey. My OH too. I run the clippers over them when I cut his hair. As for plucking them, I can't really understand why anyone does it. I tried it as a teenager it hurt and haven't bothered since. If men want to do it, that's fine, but I sort of see it as end of epoch "pee...

Re: Achocha tea

I'm guessing it's as you've already tried. A quick Google search, which I'm sure you've already done, makes only very brief references to "and a tea can be made from the seeds". I did see a site that mentioned the whole fruit, dehydrated and powdered, was also used to make tea and/ or put in smoothi...

Is it breeding or conditioning? Could their chicks be trained to sit? I'm just musing really, you'd probably need to change the rooster if you succeeded, so it wouldn't be much use.

Are Isa Browns good for eating or will they get to retire as pets?

Re: Flying insects

they are only about 15mm long X 1mm wide I think I knew that, somewhere in the brain recesses that hold my aromatherapy training. We were always told bracken was poisonous when we were kids, but then they told us that about most plants so we wouldn't just indiscriminately munch on things, I think. ...

Re: Ikea Solar Panels!

I don't know, we've just spent a small fortune on a new roof, so we've not looked with any seriousness yet.

One thing I did like was the gizmo for working out the quote, savings and expected electricity production.

Yes, we have tea tree, although we have it as an essential oil. Splendid stuff but I didn't have any to hand. Fine to add to the concoction. Or rub a leaf on.

Re: Windowsill tomatoes and Lidl planters

I'd love a greenhouse all the way along the front wall but finances don't allow as yet. It would be perfect but would cost an arm and probably both legs!
