Re: 1st time chickens for food question about smell and colour

I don't know what casues it. It's definitely not bruising. I've had one just like you describe and know exactly what you're talking about. I think the fat under the skin there has something to do with it as that was the strongest smelling bit. I cut out and disposed of all the smelly bits, no way wa...

You can put manure on top of the cardboard/newspaper to hold it down. Helps the soil too. I usually use largish flower pots filled with stones that I have picked off the beds.

Just realised you said, when covered with mulch, too.

I used to get lots of slugs and especially snails with plastic but have had very few with cardboard, I hope it stays that way ;)

I'm planning a similar thing, using brassicas and cardboard. :) As I posted elsewhere "Plastic, whilst very effective at killing weeds, is a haven for slugs, as well as being expensive, and environmentally unfriendly. Mulching fabric is less of a haven and slightly cheaper but still not environ...

Some slugs actually eat other slugs, it's the little grey ones that do the damage.
Personally I wouldn't use commercial slug pellets unless I was really desperate AND I'd tried EVERYTHING else, and I know a lot of ways to deal with slugs. . .

Raised beds need more watering not less. :? Plastic, whilst very effective at killing weeds, is a haven for slugs, as well as being expensive, and environmentally unfriendly. Mulching fabric is less of a haven and slightly cheaper but still not environmentally friendly. Cardboard is my preferred wee...

I haven't done much yet, I've only had it a week  I've cleared the nettles off a strip at the top, about 4ft by 10m, but have yet to dig out the roots. I have plans though  It's a pretty idyllic location, no car access and no water, except for The Brook at the bottom. There are six plots ...

I'm lucky where I am, no politics at all. Unless you count the prvious occupant being evicted for me to take his plots  , but he'd had two years and this is what they were like, you can't even tell there are two plots there :- http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj309/Woodburner_photos/IMG_0542...

If you use hot water to wash with you must use hot water to rinse with as well otherwise it will shrink! Personally I use cold to wash with; cheaper, simpler and more environmentally friendly.
A good soak and rinsing before washing saves on detergent too.

you could try clearing all your caches, particularly cookies, and then rebooting, I have found that Internet Explorer can often cause cookie problems, even in other browsers! First thing I tried :cooldude: Im using firefox with no problems. Last time it kept saying FF was running when it was...

Pretty sure it's XP, def. not 98. I ran "avast" but I had missed a big non automatic update because I didn't know that was the virusscanner. (I thought that, that comp had avg like mine.) So I'm thinking that some kind of self deleting virus got in, did the damage, and disappeared. I don't...

Unfortunately my attempts to sort it out have stopped me from using firefox at all. Previously images from other webpages I had visited were replacing things on the ish website. Now whwn I try and start firefox (having uninstalled and reinstalled it, and more besides) I get the message: "...
