You can put manure on top of the cardboard/newspaper to hold it down. Helps the soil too. I usually use largish flower pots filled with stones that I have picked off the beds.

I used to get lots of slugs and especially snails with plastic but have had very few with cardboard, I hope it stays that way ;)

Some slugs actually eat other slugs, it's the little grey ones that do the damage.
Personally I wouldn't use commercial slug pellets unless I was really desperate AND I'd tried EVERYTHING else, and I know a lot of ways to deal with slugs. . .

If you use hot water to wash with you must use hot water to rinse with as well otherwise it will shrink! Personally I use cold to wash with; cheaper, simpler and more environmentally friendly.
A good soak and rinsing before washing saves on detergent too.

I'm using firefox, too. You gave me the idea to try IE and it's fine there I'll try deleting cookies and history, and so forth.
