Re: Green manures - thinning?

Marvellous :) At last, something that has actually grown as intended in my veg patch!

Green manures - thinning?

I've sowed a couple of winter green manures - mustard and fodder radish. I went with the "broadcast thickly" approach and perhaps overdid it - I have mats of green seedlings atm. Should I thin them out to allow them to grow to a decent size (bearing in mind I just want them to look after t...

Dream allotment/food garden

What would your dream allotment/food growing garden be like? We're going to need to establish a new kitchen garden at some point in the next few years (planning on planting a coppice which will shade out the current plot), what should I plan on doing with it, and what should I be looking for when de...

Re: Payments for health stuff

"The Truth About Vaccines" is an interesting read on this one. It is not without its own spin but presents a good selection of facts and figures to allow a more informed decision. Basically, no vaccine is 100% effective, even initially, and vaccine protection wears off over time (natural i...

Melons

Well despite being up a hill in Wales it looks like the thing that's growing best for me is my melons (in the polytunnel)! Some of them have set fruit - I think - there's a sort of swelling behind the flowers anyway. Small as yet - think marble not golf ball. What do I do now? Am I supposed to pinch...

Re: n00b's missus

Hellooo, you seem to have a very similar life to me :) We did the spending-two-good-london-salaries-with-ease thing until dd1 arrived two years ago, and somehow I now find myself on an 8-acre farm in mid-Wales, stay at home mum to a 26 month old and a 13month old, both of whom cosleep and are very a...

There are these too: http://www.jamsponge.co.uk/. I have some waiting for use - although I'm finding pregnancy and breastfeeding work even better (one period in the last three years and counting :))

Totally totally off topic but as a teenager I lived in Dar-es-Salaam and always fancied a trip out to Mafia Island just for the name :) Never went though!

Mrs D'ville, Can you tell me more about the film and where to get hold of it? I want to home ed Ollie but OH is not convinced so a film that I can show him might help me show him that I am not delusional! You could also take a look at this book http://www.amazon.co.uk/Free-Range-Education-Home-Work...

I still just use water with the washable wipes on my one and two year olds, never needed anything else - just use more wipes if it's persistent! Best to dry them off with another wipe before putting the nappy back on to avoid nappy rash though.

Planting through black permeable weed control stuff

My veg patch is abloom with lots of things I didn't plant, mostly docks and lots of little flowers everywhere. Very pretty, but not ideal :( I'm not going to have much time this year to get up there (two very small children), so I'm thinking the black permeable stuff is my best chance of staying vag...

It might have an mpg reading then, if it has a little onboard computer - dh's 8-year-old Golf does, as does our new S-max (the S-max despite being about twice the size is more fuel efficient). Try having a look around the menus.

Signed - although I should probably have my fingers crossed behind my back since I'm not really a fan of the national curriculum - still if it's there it should at least have good stuff on it!

Personally I think single sex groups are generally not necessary, although occasionally a group that doesn't include couples is useful just because you want to sound off about your oh without them there! Eg I go to a breastfeeding group which is typically women only (as you'd expect!) - it wouldn't ...
