Re: How much space do I need?

But it's taken you a few years to get that far Odsox. You have to remember that Herbivore is just starting on the journey. You can't teach experience. That has to be learned on this growing lark.

Re: How much space do I need?

You are so right about the Jerusalem artichokes - and do be careful how you compost any remains as the blighters are like dandelions and docks, given to returning from next to nothing. Your first year is always experimental whilst you learn where the sun shines best (or not) and what the soil is rea...

Re: Self sufficientish in 2019

Hurrah - the daughter has agreed to amend the curtains to fit as she has a sewing machine and has done curtains before. Add to the list - need to do something about the hall carpet. It really needs replacing with something that can be mopped and is non slip. Not sure what and not sure if I have the ...

Re: Self sufficientish in 2019

I'm in no mood for allotment work either Ina. The broken leg that laid me off for a couple of months has moved the mojo completely. I see that the home lawn has grown moss again but I don't think I'm fit enough to spike it yet. Really it could do with completely lifting, digging over and relaying. I...

Re: No plastic

The co-op tried selling naked cucumbers but found they didn't keep so returned to plastic covers rather than throw away most of the said produce.

Re: No plastic

How do we regard tinned fruit in this situation? Much traveled but at least the packing can be recycled

Self sufficientish in 2019

Well time for a review. Not being a carpenter I bought a new bed. Had the son-in-law had time it might have been "shall we try building one?" but he's doing whatever it takes to earn a living. Yep it's a wooden one I bought. Would have been fun looking for suitable wood mind. The frame on the old on...

Re: Compostable plastic bags

I've met those bags. They don't work on normal allotment composting unless you have the time to do the full thing on that permaculture link. You have to be very dedicated to do hot composting - you need time and space. It's a case of time and space as much as anything on yer average plot mind. And n...

Re: What are you growing right now?

I'm growing impatient at the moment but it's too early for much up here except aubergines and peppers for the greenhouse on a warm window sill.

Re: 5 or 9 acres?

Having lived on a farm with footpaths here and there across it - dogs and people were an ongoing problem. If the 9 acres has been out of use for some time, then bad habits will have become ingrained. Providing screening for the farmhouse will be an interesting discussion as the farmhouse may not wan...

First we need the rain locally - it's very dry indeed for winter.

Re: Tidying up with ...

Not sure that Marie Kondo would cope with some of the clearing and tidying in this discussion. Methinks she wouldn't have a clue as to where to start. It's a thought though - how would she do in a stately home? Or a pub renovation where she had to decide what to keep or throw to make something viabl...
