Sustainable Toys?

It was out Grandson's 4th birthday yesterday and as both his Mum and Dad had to work, OH and I took him out for the day. We had a lovely time and then it was back to his house for his party.......... I have never seen so much tacky plastic in my life!!!! And all of it destined for landfill within th...

Re: Hen keepers' forums

I was born in the country, the local butcher had a slaughter-house behind his shop and we'd see animals literally going from field to butcher (probably totally illegal now) so it was hard not to know from a young age. I still eat meat - though not a vast amount, but I do think that knowing at least ...

Re: My little dog

Oh, pbf. My heart goes out to you. I had to make the same decision 14 months ago as I had to allow my beautiful boy to go (brain tumour, aged 6) It gets easier, but slowly, I still couldn't consider another dog, I was only able to tell his breeder about it last week as it was the first time I felt a...

Re: Loooonnnnngggg waiting lists......

On a site with 60ish plots we had a choice of 40 and started immediately. A year later, when we decided we'd like a second plot, we had a choice of the remaining 39. This was a few years ago, our site now has a 2 year + waiting list.

Re: Pot calls kettle black...

I'm not sure I agree, RRE. I too hate the commercialism of Christmas, but at least if kids ask for something for Christmas they do have to wait for it. I doubt the instant gratification that many would enjoy if there were no Christmas to wait for would do them any good either.

Re: Pot calls kettle black...

He's shot himself in the foot if you ask me. Christmas is magical for kids. In later life if they are going to seriously 'find religion' then there's a good chance that they'll turn to the one that played a big part in their childhood, regardless of whether it stressed the fable of Santa or the fabl...

Re: If you laugh then you are not innocent - RUDE WARNING

A 'Glory Hole' in my Gran's day was the place, usually in the depths of the cellars and near to where you kept the coal, where you chucked the broken lamps, the off-cuts of carpet and anything else that 'might come in handy one day' A really SS place come to think of it. I remember being sent there ...

Re: Another rant...sorry!

Does anyone actually know someone who ..." just [has] kids like others have cups of coffee.." ? or who "... just keep having kids to get housing and money off the state and keep themselves in fags and booze." ? Personaly, no, I dont associate with such people, but I'm aware a gr...

Re: Why the SS life?

My daughter bought me a bread machine. I have to admit that I wasn't too impressed as I thought it was one of those 'use it twice and chuck it in a cupboard' appliances. But the taste of real bread took me and OH right back to our childhoods. Consequently we started to cook the meals we remembered f...

Plain Stupid?

I was just wondering if protests like the one at Stanstead the other day help the cause or just make matters worse.

Re: Onions

I'd wait until spring to plant them as it's too late for Autumn planting now. If you're using sets the quality of the sets purchased does seem to have an impact upon the size of the bulbs and cheap ones from a dubious source are never as good as those from somewhere more reliable (in my experience)....

Re: Virgin Media

My entire family works for Virgin media. The problem is there are so many packages and everyone wants/needs something different. As stripypixiesocks says, phone them, tell them what you've already got and what you'd like/need and they will usually endeavour to sort you out. You might even wind up ta...

Re: Angry mobs...

I can well believe it, this (and previous) governments seem to always aim their vitriol at the weakest members of society. For years they've supported policies which make a 'traditional' family impossible, high cost of housing, food etc, so mothers, whether single or married with a working partner, ...

My electricity too is £80 per month. I switched to EDF as they promised it would be about a third cheaper, sadly they seem to be dragging their feet about putting us on the cheaper rate and we're still paying £80. We don't have a T.V., tumble dryer, dishwasher or microwave. I'm currently doing two l...
