Re: Organic fire

I presume your home grown logs are young growth Yes. When I moved here I planted up shelter belts consisting of Oleria, Griselinia, Willow, Alder and Ash. These are now coppiced in sequence on a 2 yearly basis and provides enough logs and kindling for at least one winter's fuel. It hadn't occurred ...

Re: Where can I buy online alternative type shampoo's?

As another ageing male with thinning hair on the top of my head, although more than enough elsewhere, I started to get scabs forming on my scalp. I believe that's fairly common in older men, but as I've never been old before I couldn't guarantee that as a fact. Anyway it got to the stage where they ...

Organic fire

I thought I might share what I've been doing for umpteen years. We have a wood burner heater in our sitting room and I light it with newspaper and kindling (we have 1 local newspaper every week that the postman delivers) We also have a continuous supply of home grown logs with a about 3 years worth ...

Re: ...delete?

You can or you can't ? If you mean can't, I don't think you can delete yourself. Most people just stop posting and drift away, although there have been a few who have asked to have their membership deleted, mainly ones who get a bit stroppy for various reasons and want to make a dramatic exit. So if...

Re: Christmas Tomatoes

Well, I got my timing slightly wrong again. There will be ripe tomatoes for Christmas, but I thought I'd timed it so that they would start to ripen in about 2 weeks time. Probably a few more sunny days than other years messes up my timing, so I will probably never get them to ripen exactly on time. ...

Re: Grow lettuce in pop bottles

Maybe your soil is quite acid, or alkaline? I think it might be more likely the water. Presumably the compost is commercial potting compost which would be pH neutral(ish) But Manchester water which apparently comes from the Lake District is probably on the acid side (soft) and is slowly leaching ou...

Hah but have any of you come up with false teeth from the NHS dentist without plastic?
Do you foresee scavenging battle fields again Flo?
I have no idea what material they were fitted into though.

Hopeless at any household crafts (with you Odsox)
I found the best way is to get a wife, Weedo.
That was the best 30 shillings I ever spent (marriage licence)
That works out at 3p a year in new money or 7d in old ... so far.

Re: Self sufficient skills List

First off I can't claim to do any household craft skills because I've never tried I can do a lot of things to do with self sufficiency though. I can lay bricks and blocks, I've constructed extensions to 2 houses. I can build sheds and greenhouses from scratch. I can mend most engineering type things...

Re: How to post a picture

No to #1, Weedo, I agree with Flo, certainly for growers. For instance in spring I have tomato seedlings sprout in my tunnels, as well as other last year's crops,. Their virtues have been known for centuries, but they need weeding out as they "are in the wrong place". 2, if humans are treated the sa...

Re: Berry identification urgent !!!

That is a Berberis Vulgaris and I'm pretty sure all Berberis berries are not toxic. I can only really comment on the purple berried one (Berberis Darwinii) I used to have, and those are sweet but rather bland to eat.
According to Wikipedia the red ones are "tart, refreshing and full of vitimin C

Pet gripes

I have loads of pet gripes, one tends to collect them with age, but I have 2 concerning cooking that gets me going every time. 1 .. Every time you see a picture of a roast leg of lamb in adverts for supermarkets, there is a slice cut to show the nice pink meat inside. This slice is always without fa...

Re: How to post a picture

As an aside to this thread of eradicating noxious weeds, one thought occurred to me .. is it ethical? Horsetails are known to have been growing in the carboniferous period due to fossil traces in coal. Human have been around for about 200,000 years and as horsetails have for at least 270 million yea...

Almost the same Weedo, except not alcoholic.
Think lemonade and cola type of drinks, although I won't confuse you with Irn-bru.( some weird Scottish concoction)
