Do you think it'll taste oniony (in a carroty kinda way)?
I'll let you know.

It has just occurred to me that Flo and myself are probably the only active members actually growing vegetables now, unlike a few years back when I joined. Times change I suppose.

Onions

I'm very pleased that my over wintering onion growing seems to have paid off. I've never grown autumn sown onions before, mainly because of getting the timing right, sow too early and they will bolt, sow too late and you get small onions. These are Senshu Yellow and were sown on the 1st of September...

Re: Food waste

there are others that go out of their way to seek out older foods Maybe not quite as extreme as that, but mushrooms are a vegetable that needs "maturing" in our house. Fresh mushrooms from the shop are pretty much tasteless, but if you take them out of the shrink wrapped plastic container and put t...

Re: New build pantry

We've got one, only ours is called a larder. When we moved in there was a windowless fuel store just off the kitchen. I kitted it out with shelves and knocked a ventilator through to the outside, which is east facing rather than north. A couple of years ago I decided to refurbish it as it had become...

Re: No Bees?

I didn't want to contradict anyone either, but we are overwhelmed by bees of all sorts, from every size of bumble bee you can think of, to several different species of solitary bee and loads of our own native Irish black honey bees. Of course it might be because there is no arable farming within 40 ...

Re: Intelligent plants?

If I remember correctly, Triffids were grown for their oil. I don't remember whether they produced edible oil or mineral type oil, but either way well worth growing.
I wonder where you can get seeds?

Re: Greenhouse lighting

LED grow lights unless you have deep pockets.
There's plenty available on a well know auction site for just those people you hinted at.

For small scale growing you can get aquarium fluorescent tubes that are quite energy efficient.
Just make sure they are labelled "growlux" or similar.

Intelligent plants?

I posted a thread on here a while ago about my sweetcorn all flowering at the same time regardless of their maturity. https://selfsufficientish.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=20211 I've also read about a single tree in a forest being attacked by pests and all the rest of the trees suddenly start pro...

Re: New season veg

Following on from another thread, it's harvest time for my French beans. We had a small cook last week mixed with some frozen peas, but there's enough for a reasonable helping each for tonight. This is a good example of free food, the troughs are years old and have paid for themselves by now. The co...

Re: Has Spring sprung?

It certainly is a funny old year.
Here we are in May and there's no may blossom out down here yet. We have had may blossom out in sheltered spots at the end of March some years, but always by mid April.

Re: Forest gardening question

I think after being on this forum for umpteen years Flo, I'm well used to being wound up. Boring here too, rain is forecast to last pretty much all day, but not as boring as Thursday when we are due a planned all day power outage. :( Just ordered a packet of Nine Star Perennial broccoli, along with ...

If its heated No it's not heated Weedo, in fact the vents are wide open all winter, to start with to give the apricot the necessary chill hours and then to stop it flowering before the bees are about. I like your idea of brassicas GA, unfortunately I've just planted out several Romanesco in the tun...
