Re: I seem to be back

Sorry to hijack your post Lyn, but I thought you would like a follow up of my "No Dig" potatoes. I dug (raked about with my hands) the rest of my Charlotte potatoes today and am still impressed. Charlotte.jpg This is about 3/4 of the entire crop. The seed was about 15 reject/left over smal...

Re: I seem to be back

Regarding my potatoes, I did make one mistake though. The cardboard was placed edge to edge and of course docks found their way through the cracks. Next time I will make a point of overlapping them.

Re: I seem to be back

I just popped in as I got notified of a new post. This maybe the first time I've logged in this year! Nothing much to report, it's a fairly terrible year as far as I'm concerned. Lack of rain, high humidity and then blistering temperatures are all taking their toll. One good thing to report that wil...

Re: Self Sufficient 2021

Yeah, same here. Never seen so many campervans. All different styles from the huge pantechnicon types down to the homemade van conversions.
Not many caravans though.

Re: Growing in 2021

Funnily enough it's better here. March and April were cold and wet (and windy) but most of May and all of June so far, have been "normal" Irish weather, mild with rain at least 2 days per week.
Everything is now growing like mad especially the grass.

Re: Self Sufficient 2021

Even on the farm in my youth We were talking this morning about waterglass when I read the BBC news about an egg glut due to no hotel breakfasts. That's something I well remember as it was always my job to put my hand in a bucket of freezing cold water to get slimy eggs for Sunday breakfast. Those ...

Re: Growing in 2021

Yes, this has been on the Irish news a few times. The sooner Scotland is back in the EU the better  However, the point I was trying (and failing) to make was, Dobies will not put live plants on a lorry and deliver them to (say) Truro*, but is willing to put them on a lorry and take them...

Re: Growing in 2021

There were no customs problems and indeed Dobies terms and conditions still maintain that delivery of seed potatoes and plants to Ireland is OK, but not to most of Scotland or Cornwall. :dontknow: But who would want to import seed potatoes to Scotland? It's us that grow and export them! M...

Re: Growing in 2021

I am totally confused about what can and can't be sent to Ireland from the UK. Seed potatoes and plants with soil attached have been mentioned several times in the media. But ... I ordered some strawberry plants from Dobies back in November which stated dispatch in 7-10 days. They were dispatched on...

Re: Growing in 2021

Lucky you, I grew Mayan Gold a few years ago and they are very nice.
I have no idea why I didn't grow them again, but now I want to ... just when all seed potatoes are in short supply here.

Re: Growing in 2021

Excuse me but it was -7.0 here last night. That's just plain cold and not growing weather. Ah, I remember those sorts of temperatures well when I lived in Kent, except in those days it was 19°F Hope is maybe on the way Flo, overnight we had another hard frost, but then had light rain and a fast inc...

Re: Growing in 2021

Today I mowed my top lawn. Not the first time I've got the mower out this early as one year I mowed the lawn every month of that year, but a fairly rare occurrence none the less. That is one of the downsides of living here, the grass doesn't stop growing. Good for the beef farmers but not so good fo...

Re: Self Sufficient 2021

Over the last couple of weeks I've discovered the benefit of not throwing stuff away, despite the plethora of TV reality shows about decluttering. I have been out and about the property fixing up things for the new growing season, refitting the hydro system, putting shelves in, and yesterday had to ...

Re: Growing in 2021

I am so envious of your heated greenhouse! Would love to see a photo. I took some photos last year, together with the hydroponics system in my bigger greenhouse. You can see them here https://selfsufficientish.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=55&t=30047 Look for my posts about half way down the 1st pa...
