Re: Pine needles, chosen correctly- excellent snack

Thanks for the poisons advice. That's important. I hope nobody makes errors. Please be careful. Glad to say it was definitely pine I had and I'm not poisoned. I'd like to add, I think I have discovered those fresh pine buds have decongestant properties effective in minutes, and are mildly stimulatin...

Re: Let's hear it for dandelions!

Supermarket anything never tastes as good as fresh out the ground. But at least you know they haven't been christened by dogs or tainted with herbicides, car fumes etc. The leaves- very bitter but could be an acquired taste. Young leaves are nicer. Dandelion root coffee... one of my favourite things...

Re: Pine needles, chosen correctly- excellent snack

@pbf- What I read was that all pine needles were edible. Can't remember where I read it but was on google. Those fresh buds and growths would keep you hydrated on a trek, as well as giving a fresh feeling. The older more leathery needles would be more work to eat, and certainly do seem like they'd m...

Pine needles, chosen correctly- excellent snack

Pine needles- Time: Late April: I'd read pine needles were edible. They're a slight a chore to eat mostly, or so I thought, until I discovered fresh, pale green, new spring growths of budlike clusters on ends of some branches. Eureka! Far better than expected. Succulent, tender, easy to gather, easy...

Re: Too late for nettles?

Slightly alarmed about older nettles irritating the kidneys... I didn't know that till right now. A few hours ago I picked and souped my first ever nettles. I picked the tops... at home I picked off leaves and discarded the flowers. I had sautéed baby potatoes in their skins, garlic and onions in th...

Re: 101 uses for tin cans

If you can still find tuna cans with a lip at both ends so you can remove them with can opener... they can be used as egg poachers or for neat round fried egg.

Re: Mobile phones, what is your opinion?

The make me grumpy... people yakking on bus/train/in restaurant etc. Height of bad manners... and people interrupting conversations once too often with them won't get onto my freinds list. They are here to stay now... I just hope I can adapt and not get narky anymore, I'm probably just old fashioned...

Re: Fishing for Crayfish

Don't be tempted to sushi them... I read that freshwater fish and crayfish need to be thoroughly properly cooked as they can carry lung flukes which can be very nasty; sometimes fatal or can ruin the central nervous system if they migrate to the brain. Fish are apparently a stage in this parasite's ...
