Re: are people relying more on make do and mend?

It's the same with duvets, the "powers-that-be" have decided they are a health risk and can't be sold as they can't be washed at 60 degrees. My local shop rings me & I collect them for our greyhound recue charity. Seems a bit of a shame when people could use them, though. MW Only the ...

Re: How much do you really need?

Nice subject for a thread, thanks! When the laundry is only lightly soiled, I often just use baking soda and Borax. Otherwise, the Seventh Generation or Planet, and half as much. Wash in cold water, and short cycle. Hang up to dry. I shampoo every four or five days, most of the time. Shampoo once, a...

Re: Do/could you live without a credit card? Is this a goal...?

We don't use credit cards however we do have debit cards and a credit card for the business which is automatically paid off by direct debit each month. A quick tip which I have posted elsewhere Don't cut up all of your credit cards if you are trying to go back to just using cash. It is always good ...

Re: Uplifting comforts

Such nice things in all these posts!

Drinking a glass of milk.

Getting things put away and having space.

Giving things to someone who really appreciates the giving and the things.

Do/could you live without a credit card? Is this a goal...?

A few thoughts: Self-sufficiency means different things at different times in our lives, according to our frame of reference. Our grandparents bought groceries on credit, and paid the bill at the end of the month. Lots of people rented housed before WWII. Owning a home seems more recent for many. Cr...

Re: What do you do with unwanted gifts?

Mylovelyhorse, "amnesty" is a very apt way to put it. My brother, sister, and I agreed not to give birthday or Christmas presents anymore. I think we're all relieved. The thoughtless presents, or the ones so obviously obtained in haste, make the ones given with love all the more poignantly...

Re: What do you do with unwanted gifts?

It is hard when gifts show that the person who gave them, either doesn't see who we are, or wasn't interested in giving something that would be appropriate. It hurts when we give ourselves, and honor others, take responsibility for much, help lots, and then be given something that is so inappropriat...

Re: Oil filled radiators.

I have two: one in the kitchen and one in the bedroom. I've been told that they are much more economical than heating the whole house/flat/apt. I keep the house at ca. 52 degrees Fahrenheit at night and ca. 60-62 degrees in the day. I keep the electric, oil-filled radiator in the kitchen set so that...
