Re: When is butternut squash ready to pick?

Thanks for the replies, and you are right, Odsox, that Barbara Butternut always stays stripey.

Still don't really know when it's ripe though! I picked one yesterday, and the inside is only light orange (tasted ok though), so I guess my only answer is "dunno, but not yet".

Re: Potato Blight

We are in southern Spain, and often have the same problem. Your pictures look like 'early blight', which has the black dots, with the leaves yellowing and the plant looking pretty iffy. It eventually affects the potatoes themselves if you don't treat them with an anti-fungal spray. Potatoes can also...

When is butternut squash ready to pick?

I'm growing a winter squash in Spain - Barbara Butternut F1 hybrid. I've read about when to pick butternut squash, but this squash is different - it doesn't turn brown, it's green with a stripe. My largest squash is about 12 inches long, 5 inches in diameter, but I don't know if it's ready or not. A...

Re: Small sweetcorn plants in Spain - help!

Thanks for the suggestions! I think the answer just may be that we had a cool damp spring, then it got hot very quickly. The corn tassled before the ears had a chance to grow properly. We picked our first ears today. They are very small, about 5 inches at most, but the kernels are fairly well formed...

Small sweetcorn plants in Spain - help!

The first year I lived in Spain, we grew wonderful sweetcorn. The past 2 years, we have had major problems - no pests, but very short plants. We grow from seed in the greenhouse, then plant out. The corn plants seem to tassle very quickly, while the cobs are very tiny. Then the cobs start to silk wh...

hi from Spain

"self-sufficientish" describes our life in Spain to a T! We moved from the UK 5 years ago, after working in the IT industry. We now run an olive farm, live in rural Spain in the mountains, and grow almost all our own veg! Also cherries, walnuts, chestnuts and almonds! I'm hoping to get som...
