Re: back after a long sabatical

Ah yes - getting older isn't fun... I've been on sick leave now for 9 months. The garden looks awful - not that I usually am a very tidy gardener, but it's worse now. And I don't know what the NHS is doing, but they don't have time for people like me who can manage on their own, even if I'm not stro...

Re: Country Wines

That's similar to the German rum pot (Rumtopf): https://mygerman.recipes/traditional-german-rum-pot-rumtopf/ We always used 54% rum for that - dark rum, of course - only found that in Scotland once, in Lidl's (and they asked me at the till if I really wanted 3 bottles of that :) ). Sugar should be h...

Re: I seem to be back

This is strange - I hadn't got any notices for ages, and now all of a sudden - I had tried to log on at some point, but for whatever reason couldn't... So here I am. Hopefully a bit more often. :)

Re: Got the Signoff...

Weeds are a prominent feature of my spaces... I think the worst thing is that I'm actually quite fond of a couple of types as long as all the crops/plants are getting along OK Same here - I just fear that the neighbours think it's all wrong... The height of gardening for them is a bit of sterile la...

Re: Pet gripes

Strangely enough, the cheap ones I get from Lidl seem to be doing really well... Mine sometimes get slightly damaged from working in the lab (acid etc), so I won't wear anything expensive.

Re: Not Self Sufficient

So many of the older folks don't do online ordering for food, online banking even on the phone. Technology doesn't help granny of 90 without family close by. And none of that is any use during a power cut, anyway. I hate this craze of "card payments only" that even some of the smaller sho...

Re: Got the Signoff...

Ina - up here all the cafes/pubs/care homes are advertising jobs on the minimum wage. I wouldn't like to guarantee that anyone will be able to get a Christmas meal out easily with decent service or that grandparents in care homes will be well looked after. Same here. It used to be that casual jobs ...

Re: Got the Signoff...

You are right about the food prices - I've been noticing it for a while... Must make more of an effort next year. I wish I could reduce my hours, too; I'm just getting too old for all this stress at work. Flat out at the moment. And of course they can't afford to employ another lab assistant - oh no...

Re: Old shoes - what to do?

Thanks for that info - I'll have to look into that a bit more closely. Might even be an idea for my place of work... Especially as they say in any condition is accepted!

Everybody on the move? I envy you... I think I'll be stuck with my council house forever. Nevermind, could be worse.

Re: DIY Energy

I'm glad that I still manage to live in somewhat cold environments... I rarely had any heating on last winter. The de-humidifier helps massively - don't know how I would manage without it these days. (Helps to get washing dry in winter, too.) Still, I've been warned that I can expect the electricity...

Re: DIY Energy

That will be interesting to find out. Reduced evaporation might even be beneficial... Wonder whether they've done an impact assessment?
