Liquorice

Has anybody ever grown liquorice? I've been given a plant - well, a seedling, really - and would love to grow it on, but I'm not sure where to put it in a small garden... And whether it would do anything at all in a container.

Re: Hot weather and water

I wouldn't drink rainwater - it contains all the muck, dust and bird shit that's been collecting on the roofs and other areas from which it has been collected for the past several weeks...

Re: Weed killing on lawns

In a lot of places here, the use of herbicides for cosmetic purposes (i.e. killing weeds in a lawn) is not permitted. We like a "lawn" that looks like reclaimed forest floor. When we have bare patches, we seed them with a mix of grass and clover seed. I wish they'd do that here. Instead, the counci...

Re: Weed killing on lawns

I always think clover , white or red , give a lawn a bit of colour and character . A slab of just perfectly green grass might be loved by some but I find it just a tad dull. At least it's better than the usual grey mass of chuckies in most of my neighbours' gardens... But those that do have lawns k...

Re: Weed killing on lawns

The only weed I try to keep out of my "lawn" (= grassy patch) is docks; everything else gets encouraged... Since I moved in here a lovely lot of white clover and tares have developed. Bees and other beasties love it!

Re: High street shops

I suspect that some of the really cheap stuff fell off the back of a lorry... Or is fake, as suggested. My problem with quite a few of the small shops is their opening times! When you work full time, it's often impossible to use the local shops. Closed at 5, and of course on Sunday, which I don't mi...

I don't re-read anything regularly, but definitely have a few go to's when nothing else fits the bill - anything Jane Austen, Terry Pratchett, Marge Piercy etc. Eclectic tastes for every mood.
Marge Piercy? I shall have to find out about her... But Jane Austen - yes, definitely another one.

Re: Does anyone NOT have a television?

I go with Ina, a good book beats TV anyday; I am one of those people who re-reads and actually wears out books and have to replace them. Yep - so do I. And at the library they've stopped pointing out that "you've read this book already" - so what? If it's a good book, it's worth re-reading. I read ...

And we've not had a drop of rain for weeks... From the bus to Dundee today, I saw several farmers irrigating tatties as well as neeps.

Save the seeds after they flower.

Re: Does anyone NOT have a television?

I think people can't cope with peace and quiet these days Ina.I remember one holiday we were on,they had a quiet pool.No music, adults only, bliss! Well it was until a couple plonked themselves onto sunbeds right next to us,then proceeded to turn on a phone, and play music full volume. We've got a nei...

I use them for rubbish too . Perhaps it's guilt thing but I tend to turn them inside out before filling them.

Re: Does anyone NOT have a television?

Any kind of music would be too much for me - why is it necessary? Would fewer people go swimming if there wasn't any? I doubt it. The way I used to swim - head under water, and up for breathing - any music turns into a constant wail... Like a police car coming ever closer. Bloody horrible. I just am...
