Re: Uses for 5 litre plastic water bottles?

I use several (filled with water) in the garden for weighing down stuff that might otherwise fly off in the wind... Lightweight greenhouses etc.

Re: Contacting Retailers/Sick of Plastic

It's easy enough to just not buy things that we consider are packaged with too much plastic... The problem I see is that, especially with fresh produce, the entire production/distribution system has to be changed, otherwise we might end up with masses of waste. Plastic does have advantages: longer s...

Re: Rebel

It's not as effective here as it would be in a country with lower humidity. But then - half the year the temperature outside is cool enough anyway! In really hot spells during summer (not that we have them often) I might go without milk for a few days... But milk is not essential for our survival. I...

I do have a fridge, but I'd love to not need it (milk and cheese are the problem), and have no freezer.
I use a claypot cooler outside the kitchen door instead of fridge - haven't used one for at least 10 years now. And I reckon I waste less food than the average Scot...

Re: The new banish plastic movements

Most of my cardboard goes into the compost... Plastic bags that aren't easily avoidable fulfil a double function (at least) - the contents of the cat litter tray has to be somewhat protected before it goes in the bin... Etc. I still use plastic containers that were supposed to be single use 20 years...

Hiya, and welcome from Scotland!

I do still drive, but I'm in the process of selling the car, now that I have a bus pass... ;)

Re: German supermarkets in Ireland

They introduced decaf (real) coffee, too... Not sure whether it was just because of my repeated requests - but they did, anyway! And they started selling rye bread again after they stopped it for a while.

Re: German supermarkets in Ireland

They are capable of learning, though.... Here in Scotland they used to sell (or try to!) humidifiers. They don't any more. And kids' trailers for bikes were a one-off, too - just too dangerous on these roads.

Re: Bread flour question

I think that using the modern, gluten rich varieties of wheat that produce the so-much-loved-by-the-British fluffy types of bread which, as has been noted correctly, are not liked by the rest of Europe (at least traditionally - sadly that's changing) is responsible for at least some of the large num...

Re: Storm Dylan?

But yes, know the problem with buses where the doors won't close and so the bus goes nowhere. Doesn't just happen in your neck of the woods ina. You'd think they'd have found a solution for that by now, wouldn't you?! Kind of emergency bolts for windy weather - or something else mechanical r...

Storm Dylan?

Did "he" cause any damage where you are? One maybe strange sounding, but not unprecedented effect it had here: the bus I was on coming back from Aberdeen yesterday broke down... Those wonderful, modern, top-of-the-range buses they have on this service can't deal with a bit of wind. I gets under the ...

Thanks, Flo. Yes, it's better than it has been for a few years. They've all be saying - make your indispensable, and they'll have to make it permanent... And I managed to buy a pair of boots that seem to (almost) fit on Saturday - which means I can walk a bit further without being in pain - it all h...
