Re: What are you reading?

Thanks for reviving this! Since I've been sick for a few months (and will be for at least a few more) I have plenty of time for reading, but not always enough strength to get to the library... Your book sounds interesting. I'm re-reading a lot of books I've had for decades. Last one a book of good-n...

Re: What are you growing right now?

We've not had snow yet this season... Keep fingers crossed it stays that way! Had a few days below zero, and that's good, needed for black currants etc. Snow drops are out in full force. My house rarely is above 15 degree, and mostly below. In summer I sometimes get above 20, and then it gets uncomf...

Oh yes, don't I know it... I regularly get my mustard from Germany. I like neither the English nor the French (Polish will do). And don't get me started about bread...

Welcome!

Re: Unseasonal weather

Well, we had a "heat wave" here last summer, and a drought. Still rarely got above 20 degree C.

Re: Unseasonal weather

Balmy here too - since Christmas we have averaged 38c daytime and 21c nightime - sleeping with every window and door open . No growth outside the shaded beds - soil temp around 22c so nothing is germinating - or surviving long if it does. Bloody hell. I'd heard Australia was getting hotter... Wait ...

Re: Heat a greenhouse (environmentally friendly please)

Didn't they use to put muck heaps in greenhouses to benefit from the heat?

Re: Unseasonal weather

Not quite that warm here, but at least we did have one below zero period of a few days. Don't know whether that's enough for the black currants...

Re: RenewableCandy's Hardcore challenge

I hope that flu's gone, Ina. Thanks for asking - the flu is long gone, but it turned out I suffer from an overactive thyroid... And to get treatment for that I have a 3 month waiting time for the endocrinologist. Been off sick since October, and still have 4 weeks to wait for treatment. If it doesn...

Re: Slug pellet ban

There is no cheap beer in Scotland any more - minimum pricing per alcohol unit. And it wasn't that cheap a method, anyway. I find the organic pellets good enough, and at least you know you aren't killing anything you don't want to. More expensive, of course. Was given the wool pellets once as well,b...

They are based on ferric phosphate - there's several on the market. Used by organic veg growers and gardeners.

Re: Slug pellet ban

I've never used the metaldehyde slugpellets. I don't suppose they'll be banning the ones that have always been allowed for organic farming?
