Re: 'The Edible Garden' starts at 8pm on BBC 2 on April the 7th

I managed to find this programme online as I missed the first couple, and I was reminded of this place after Alys' mention of self-sufficient...ish. I have enjoyed the programmes so far, but I agree with the previous comments re: small gardens (my entire garden is probably about the si...

Re: Heated propagator?

There's no Freecycle group near me - they're all at the other end of the country. I could try the Dutch version of Ebay though. :thumbleft: Fatima, I wonder if the bubble wrap would be enough to keep the temperature up? I've seen temperatures of 22-26C mentioned - I suppose if the temperature in the...

Re: Heated propagator?

I do have a couple of 'normal' propagators, but even in those, the chilli seeds seem to take a while to get themselves sorted. Maybe I'm just being impatient? I don't have a 'nice sunny windowsill' to put them on, so they end up either on a table near a window, or in the loft (where it's warm) with ...

Heated propagator?

I'm wondering about getting a heated propagator for growing chilli plants, as last year's crop took a while to get going. The only windowsill we have is in the lounge, and that is the domain of our ornamental lazy cat collection.  We do have a smallish greenhouse, but it's not heated...

Re: garlic

Mine looked like tiny onions, with the exception of one bulb that look vaguely garlicky:

Re: peppers/chillies

We went a bit mad with chillies this year, so our small greenhouse is full of them - the poor tomato plants are feeling a bit overwhelmed. The Mulatto variety didn't do well at all, but we have a couple of Bulgarian carrots and Variegatas that are doing well (although the Variegatas seem to be all f...

Re: garlic

I pulled up one garlic with yellow leaves yesterday and it looked like a shallot, so I was disappointed. I'm glad I read this thread, as I expected my garlic to look like, erm, garlic. We go on holiday in a couple of weeks, so hopefully that will be enough time for the rest of the garlic to be...

I planted some Twilights (amongst other varieties) ages ago, and they're only just surfacing now. I am finding most of the chilli plants to be lazy, so patience is required (and it's not something I have much of either).

Fig update: Just been out to check the plant, as I noticed a few of its leaves were yellow and the bottom three fruits have 'drooped'. They're not dark brown, but they felt very soft and squishy. So, I lopped them off the tree and cut one open. There is no real smell to the flesh, but it tastes fine...

Errr depending on the variety (like Turkish brown), that brown soggy drooping fig may well have been exactly right , and ripe. Did you cut it open?, it should have been moist soft and red inside, and smelling amazing?. No, because when I cut it off the tree, it was squishy (as in rotten and a bit m...

Just posting a pic of some of my chillies, as they look much prettier now that they've gone red.

Well, my fig plant is still going strong, and still producing both new shoots and figs. I think there's about a dozen figs on it now, but none of them seem inclined to think about ripening. The lowest one that has been on the tree for ages went brown and soggy - it drooped in a not particularly nice...

Hi kitty B The yellowing is usually a sign of: (a) lack of light - if it's the odd leaf ( and/or a lower one) and you are growing your peppers in pots, then rotate the plant. (b) Magnesium ... magnesium is to (green) plants what iron is to humans ... the (in)organic route (source of an earlier disc...

Actually, that's a bit of a fib. The plants have started to look a bit yellowy, but with no other signs of problems. I've read that yellow leaves can be caused by low temperatures, but could too high temperatures also cause yellowing of the leaves?
