Re: Cost of keeping hens?
I started recording our livestock expenses versus 'revenue' from not having to buy eggs and meat since early November. As we've had all of our livestock since before then it is a bit weighted in our favour. I get the 'revenue' from not buying eggs (€3/dozen), chicken meat (€6.50/kilo), duck meat (€5...

Re: Turkey
We've got a couple of Turkeys on the go at the moment.
Last weighing they were 13 and 10 kilos each, so pretty hefty birds (around 5 months old I think).
I'm expecting to do the throat/jugular cut, if possible going all the way through the spinal cord which should make it fairly instantaneous.

Ooh, forgot about the strawberries, don't think they'll fruit much longer as the frosts are now starting here.

Re: Is the grass really greener?
We've lived overseas now for the last 11 or so years, having just moved to France in February from the Middle East. The grass is certainly ' greener ' here in France,...there was so little grass in the Middle East. Life is what you personally make of it, there were some difficulties living out...

Re: How can I make a cheap Pelletizer
I've been experimenting with this. We've a lot of dry hay, cut and packed in boxes in our barn. So I use one of those hand-operated briquette makers, using a mix of hay and 'used' rabbit bedding (wood shavings et al), compress it after first lining the unit with cardboard and a string for tying. See...

Re: Broody hens?
We've just had the first of our many chickens go broody, so we decided to let her get on with it. She was seperated from the others in her own 'maternity' ward (dog travel crate (minus dog)) and a couple of days ago we heard the first cheeps from under her. We know the sound as we've also had a coup...
