Re: Cooking in a wood-burning stove
Mine is something like the ones at the top in this advert: http://www.produkte24.com/cy/bauhaus-oesterreich-966/bauhaus-werbebeilage-gueltig-vom-28-08-2007-29-09-2007-10847/seite-3-gross.html so not much scope for cooking on top. I try to put the potatoes in once the fire has produced some hot ash a...

Cooking in a wood-burning stove
I have a wood-burning stove in my living room and it heats my living room wonderfully and does a feeble job of trying to heat the rest of the house. I have started putting potatoes wrapped in foil into the stove and the resulting baked potatoes are MUCH nicer than those cooked in the oven (and no mo...

Re: what to do with chestnuts, how to preserve?
Why not make some fantastic soup and then freeze it? Something like this perhaps?

Re: no sloes
Here in the Czech Republic there was a poor season for fruit generally but I did find some sloes and my sister-in-law enjoyed her Xmas present. I had a demijohn full of alcoholic sloes and tried adding more gin and sugar, hoping they would still have some flavour and colour to impart. Result? Little...

Make sure you take some gloves with your bucket when you go picking. I always wear gloves but regularly get a thorn in a finger or thumb.

Re: What types of pumpkin and squash did you grow this year?
I don't think you can beat butternut squash for flavour. I just use the seeds from the year before. I still have a couple of litres of soup in the freezer. I tried to upload a photo but it is bigger than 720 pixels. If you'd like to see it, here's the link. http://www.jeremytaylor.eu/recipes/buttern...

Re: Cat litter
That's where it went this morning but I was wondering if someone was going to tell us about their huge tomatoes they've grown thanks to used cat litter compost... Unlike this morning when I emptied the thing, I won't be holding my breath.

Cat litter
Not as in a bunch of kittens, but as in the stuff cats are supposed to use as a toilet. I'm looking after 2 cats for nearly 3 weeks and they produce an amazing amount of incredibly smelly poo. Can this, together with the litter, be put onto the compost or should it be all thrown in the dustbin? Than...

Re: sauerkraut
A follow up as requested: I made the sauerkraut, trod it down nicely, added slices of horseradish, fitted the wooden lid and left it for 24 hours. After 24 hours I tried to open the lid - but it had expanded with the liquid from the sauerkraut. I pulled and pulled... got neighbour to help - but no, ...

Re: sauerkraut
My stepmother gave me a fancy plastic cutter with a wickedly sharp V-shaped blade - but it took me about twenty minutes to cut half a cabbage. I then used a Czech made grater (looks like a big cheese grater and set me back £4.50). It works brilliantly. I would recommend anyone heading to Prague to c...

sauerkraut
It's my first attempt at sauerkraut so I'm looking forward to seeing what happens. I watched a few things on you tube to see how different people do it and then took the plunge. Yesterday I grated ten kilos of white cabbage and left the cabbage with a lot of salt, overnight. This morning I put the c...

picking rosehips?
I've noticed that lots of people (100-150 people a day) are visiting my rosehip syrup page http://www.jeremytaylor.eu/rosehip_syrup.htm I read somewhere that rosehips should be picked after the first frost (which I don't think many people in Britain have experienced yet). Has anyone tried making ros...
