Re: Numbers of chooks

That sounds like more than enough room inside for them, as long as they have access to the outside. We have a few shelves and perches for them. They all seem to prefer cuddling together on one perch though! You can put a few perches up and I am sure some will get used and others ignored. They seem t...

Re: Planting eating potatoes?

I would definitely go for it. If they are sprouting then they should give you a good crop. For some reason I have never had much success planting un-chitted potatoes although they are supposed to grow just as well, just take a little longer.

As long as they are disease free you should be fine.

Re: Seeds from Peppers

I haven't done it for bell peppers but it works very well for chilis. We just dry the chilis and then when we are ready we sow the seeds. Seems to work every time.

Re: Rabbits and their Waste

No problem in composting sawdust. It takes a few months to compost but does break down fine, especially when activated by all the Rabbit poop. You could always switch to straw to make it quicker.

Re: Any info at being green on a budget!

Check out sites like ebay for cheap solar panels. A tip for deep cycle batteries. Phone around fork lift truck suppliers. They change the deep cycle batteries every few years or so on rental vehicles and you may be able to pick some up very cheaply. They won't be perfect but if you are on a budget t...

Re: Soap Nuts - tried and tested - and verdicts?

We have been using ecoballs for ages and then seem to work great. A bit of vinegar is added and that's it. Also we only use a cold wash as a hot wash would probably blow out the Inverter!

There are hardly ever any problems and with a hot wash they would work very well indeed.

Re: Open fire - help/guidance needed

A wood burner is all we use to heat our house. They give out an incredible amount of heat. There is just no comparison to an open fire. You will save masses of wood. I would definitely recommend one. You may be able to fit it yourself but it really depends on the configuration of the chimney as to h...

Re: propagating lavender

I don't even use rooting powder. I simply snip of a few cutting remove some of the leaves and stick them straight in some soil in a pot. Seems to work fine.

Compost Toilets: Build Your Own

Many people are put off by the concept of Composting Toilets. The reality is that a basic, home made Composting Toilet is beneficial in so many ways and not really much of a chore at all. What is so difficult about emptying a bucket covered in sawdust once every week or so? I have now been using a h...

Re: olive tree

We grew figs no problem in the Uk. We now have hundreds of Olive trees here in Spain and I don't really think you will get many Olives in the UK. They need such a long warm summer. I would definitely try it if you can keep it warm though. You can however, grow the trees outside no problem. You just ...

Re: Apple and pear question.

You can also hunt around your area for any trees in flower.

Nick ( um, borrow) a few cuttings with floweres on and put in a bucket of water near the trees.

We did it last year and it worked.

Re: A chicken question.

I would forget about buying oyster shells etc.

You want to save money where you can. The Chickens supply you with the eggshells and that is all we ever use.

Baked and crushed, they do the job, and for free. We have never had a problem doing this and , as always, free is best.

Marks from the scourer should disappear in a day or so. It shouldn't have actually "scratched", but is more likely just marks from the scourer itself.

Really surprised it didn't work, it is what we always use.

Re: A chicken question.

I recently wrote a post on our site about getting super orange egg yolks.

Basically it's all about the veggies and the grass.

Throw in grass clippings and cabbage leaves regularly or let them have access to fresh grass and you will be wearing shades when you break those eggs open!

Simple but efficient.

Olive Oil, and that's it. Works a treat. You won't really need anything else.
