Re: Goji berries?
I have goji berry plants and they seem to have developed a problem due to potassium deficiency. I've read that they should be fed with potash/tomato food so that's what I'm going to do from now on.

Re: chickens NOT out!
ACV, apart from being a good tonic like the garlic powder, is good for keeping worms at bay. Although i still worm with flubenvet every 3-4 months.

Re: fizzing rosehip syrup
sounds like the natural yeasts in/on the fruit reacting with the sugar. i doubt there’s enough yeast to actually turn it into liqueur and if it’s in a glass bottle i’m sure it will be fine.

Re: Chickens; ex-batt or not?
Just because they stop laying it doesn’t mean you have to start buying eggs again. When our ex batts stopped laying, we bought a cple of point of lay hybrids. When our ex batts passed away, we replaced them with more ex batts. With thought-out rotation, it’s possible to have your own eggs even if s...

Re: Chickens; ex-batt or not?
if your motive is to give a happy retirement to ex batts.. go that way, be prepared to have to buy eggs while they live out their lives. Also be prepared to cull them if their old age makes them miserable through illness etc. .... Just because they stop laying it doesn’t mean you have to start buyi...

Re: Basic Manners
I didn’t say cultural diversity was solely to blame. I said it’s one of the factors and I also went on to say there are other factors to throw into the mix. I carry on saying please and thank you etc regardless of whether other people do or not. I’m not going to get myself wound up over the actions ...

Re: Chickens; ex-batt or not?
battery hens can go on and live 12 months or more after they stop laying, let them live out the rest of their life with someone who can give them the 'retirement' they deserve. they don't deserve to be eaten as soon as their egg laying stops and they're not suitable for that anyway. as i already sai...

Re: Basic Manners
cultural diversity has a lot to do with it. In some cultures, Norway for example, they don't have a word in their language for 'please'. The closest word/expression is 'unnsklyd meg' (sp?) which means excuse me.... In Norway it's not expected to thank people for small courtesies because they believe...

.... Can't help with the urticaria but both here and in Japan, going to the pharmacy and showing them what the problem is is quite a good way to get some cream or stuff that you need. .... was thinking the same as you! Re: Chickens; ex-batt or not?
Well, if you plan to eat them then you're better off with a dual purpose breed. You're not going to get much meat off an ex batt, they're simply not bred for the table and, IMO, deserve to live out their days once rescued. We've had 7 ex batts so far, plus normal egg laying hybrids and a cple of pur...

Re: chickens NOT out!
That is good news and, in this case, a victory for common sense. I don't agree, however, that chickens are less bother than other pets. I certainly wouldn't recommend someone keeping chickens if they have a very small garden. Their poo does smell and is more difficult to clear up than a dog or a ca...

crab apple ID help please
wild food friends, I need your advice! 2 sheds brought these back with him from a dog walk. They are some sort of wild crab apple but he's obviously picked them too soon as the seeds are still white (see photo). Any idea what variety it is, if it's an ornamental crab are the fruits still edible and ...

just thought I'd let you know, the couple have been told they can keep their hens. Their solicitor found a clause in the allotments act which helped sway the council's decision. The couple were very grateful for all the support they received.
great news!
