Looking for charity trustees.

Hello everyone. I decided to get out there and do something! So, I'm doing a sponsored walk. I've set up a not-for-profit social enterprise to collect the sponsorship money. I'd dearly like to turn it into a charity, so I can collect gift aid on the sponsorings. To do that, I need at least two trust...

Re: How do I grow and refine sugar?

...Apparently there used to be a chap at my allotment site that always put his plot down to 1/4 barley and 3/4 potatoes, and had a pot still in his shed... Ha ha, there's a guy with his priorities sorted! Beer and whisky should only involve grain. Yes, that's what I thought. I just was wondering if...

Forgive my ignorance, but what are we talking? Whisky, beer, vodka, potcheen?

Anxious to learn, 2RM

Re: How do I grow and refine sugar?

... Not that everything always has to make sense, of course... Ah, but when the rapture comes, and all those nice, rich, capitalist types are swept up to heaven to be with Jesus, and all we self-sufficientish malcontents are left behind to suffer the tribulation with nothing but our existing skills...

Indeed he does, under November. Well, that's all the excuse I need to grow it! And a bit extra for experimentation on.

Thanks, 2RM.

Re: How do I grow and refine sugar?

Ah, now that's a positive sort of clue. I can work with that. By cooking, though, does one mean boiling, roasting, frying, fricasseeing or casseroling? I think a little research is required. I shall trawl the net, and let you know what I find out.

Cheers, 2RM.

Re: How do I grow and refine sugar?

Found some contenders with a google search. But before I spend any money, I'd like to know what I'm going to do with them, once harvested.

Cheers, 2RM.

Re: How do I grow and refine sugar?

You don't (at least not easily) ;) .. if you look at the process on the British Sugar website you'll see that refined white sugar is complicated when you start with sugar beet. Edit.. Link To British Sugar "Journey of Sugar" . If the smell of the local sugar beet factory os anything to go...

How do I grow and refine sugar?

Hey, y'all, once again. Here's a poser for you. I use a lot of sugar, either in preserves or in home brewed wine and beer. As the recently arrived tenant of a newly aquired allotment, I am wondering if it may be worth my while putting a dozen or so square metres down to sugar beet, and trying to ext...

Re: Just a thought about sport...

Things like the triple jump or hop , skip and jump as it was called at school seem just bizarre and then there's things like dressage, and syncronized diving all totally useless feats in the real world. Agreed. The triathlon - running, biking, swimming, seems to me like a sensible combination for a...

Re: "Just a thought"

The NHS, I am told, often makes its life and death decisions on the basis of 'qualyia' or 'quality adjusted life years'. For my part, I cannot see the benefit (as my late grandmother recently did) of spending my ending years in a care home, subjected to the care home regime, with all the loss of aut...

I love my allotment! / Tips for max productivity?

The title says it all, really. After 4 or 5 weeks of 4 mornings per week, I've lost weight, got fitter, found a hobby, met loads of great new people, and stopped drinking more than is good for me. (Well, almost!) Now, having discovered that allotmenteering suits me fine, I'd like to move onto the ne...

Just a thought about sport...

...sort of arrived out of the blanket Olympics coverage. Don't get me wrong, I think sport is great, for the sports minded. It gives them a purpose in life, and for the rest of us non-competitors, a few moments of interested relaxation. But. (There's always a but!) To use a sporting analogy, life is...
