Quit my job

Had enough of corporate life! I have been suffering from stress for months now, and finally I quit. It's scary, but good. I have a place at uni to study youth work and community development in September, and am working 2 hours a week setting up a drop in centre at the moment. I have to work my notic...

Re: Can I "not buy anything new for a year?"

We need a part for our boiler that we can't get secondhand, and we need it for the efficiency of our boiler, at the moment it's taking ages to heat the water up which means we have to run it for a while before it's even warm, which is wasteful both of energy and water (and therefore ££ as well), so ...

Re: Can I "not buy anything new for a year?"

I'm intending to have another crack at this in 2010. I'm going back to being a skint student so might not have much choice come September!

Re: Petition to ceo of Primark

I've signed it too. I think our penchant for cheap throwaway fashion has led to terrible exploitation. I see paul's argument, and there was a TV show a while back where they took fashion students to see how the clothes were made, and they were very torn too between the principle of those workers (so...

Re: 'Ish Christmas

We've been having a clearout of my partner's daughter's stuff recently Flo, and some of the things she got for Christmas last year she no longer wants, and some of it hasn't even been used! She doesn't even remember unwrapping them. So you're right about things like nice clothes being just as good a...

'Ish Christmas

OK so every time I walk past the shops I'm going GRRR at the masses of Christmas tat already stuffing the shelves....adverts for all kinds of credit for people who can ill afford it to rack up Christmas debt on the quest for a "perfect" Christmas. I thought I'd start a thread on ideas for ...

Re: Help needed with life - long post

Hiya Rosey and Chrissie I have only just seen this thread, I'm sporadic on here, but I had to reply to this as so much of it resonated with me. I was bullied badly throughout high school, and like Chrissy, had no support from teachers - I got blamed if I retaliated, I was suspended for 2 weeks becau...

Re: Annoying other half

Craig I have an OH who isn't really into all the green stuff either, but he did come around to the allotment and now loves it. If she's been brought up consumerist, it's not an easy habit to break, I was brought up in a more "ish" way but I did go through a consumerist phase when I was you...

Re: 5 year olds and farm animals and E. coli

Oh boy, the nanny state strikes again! You might be amused by this one. I recently went to China, and had to use a public toilet in Beijing, as you do. There was an American woman in there with a small child. Now, these toilets were not pretty by any means, but there was soap and water there to wash...

Re: 5 things for the week

I did try freecycle for a table, but the only one offered was much bigger than what our living room would fit! The doggies went out on Friday, I got my table and folding chairs, and I've weeded the beds. I will be popping by the library on my way home from work tomorrow, and we christened the table ...

Re: contacting my sister - mistake?

That's a shame Rosey, sounds like your parents have issues!

I have a close relationship with my Nan, and was close to my grandad before he died so at least I have had my paternal grandparents. Families, who'd have em!

5 things for the week

I've got a day off today, and I've just made my weekly '5 things' list. I've just started doing this, as a family we're easing ourselves into the 'ish' lifestyle and I find it's a good thing to help me achieve my 'ish' goals. 1. Become acquainted with my local library - that will be this afternoon's...
