Re: Selfsufficientish Courses what do you want?

I'd definately be up for anything on foraging/wildfoods etc.
Also the reduce reuse recycle idea is really good. Anything to do with making an allotment work for you all year round etc would be good too.

Now the evenings are getting lighter I'll be up there more often. I got this ace book for christmas call the half hour allotment which basically helps set out ta...

Don't let us have them on ours unfoutenately.

My grandad used to keep pigs and chickens on his but that was 40 odd years ago. I suppose the older more established allotments that have been around for a long time are likely to let you.

I got my havnds on my plot last Spetember and I definately think doing a bit at a time is the best approach. I also recommend to try and get something growing a soon as you can - I got some winter cabbages and onions in and it is great motivation to see them growing, knowing that I'll get something ...

I have been using low energy bulbs for years - in fact I have just had to replace one that I have had about 9 or 10 years - it had moved house with me several times. I don't mind them - they aren't as bright but have never given me migranes or eczmer or anything like that. Howver at the end of the d...

I suppose it depends on what you want to grow inititially. You Could try mulching with Cardboard and compost. I saw it in a book and am going to give it a go on a part of my plot that I haven't got around to digging. The book says to: Strim and then mow the grass as short as you can. Leave the cutti...

I've just got hold of an allotment and have access to a good supply of horse manure so will be looking to do as you suggest.

I think I'll live a bit of room to try and get a few bits growing though.

Why should you not use manure where you want to grow root crops?

Thanks for all the advice. I popped down and spoke to the chap who has the plot opposite and he said exactly the same as you guys reading rotivating. He had taken on his plot this time last year in as bad a state as mine and got half it rotavated. He said there was at least 5 time s the weeds in the...

I'm in for allot-o-ment of fun!

Hullo everyone, I have been lucky enough to get my mits on an allotment plot from our local town Council. The nice people there are even going to strim it (it is v over grown) and rotavate it for me, so I should be ready to get going next week. Has anyone any tips on the best way to put my plot to g...

However if you get your home energy from a green supplier then it doesn't matter that you are using more energy by working at home as it will be from renewable and zero carbon sources, plus because you have cut out the car journey you'll be reducing you're carbon footprint even more!! Also by workin...

..I mean save rather than cost. I agree with you elfcurry - it's annoying how many different facts and figures there are circulating about how much energy is wasted by leaving things on stand-by. Not complete rubbish though - I suppose how long you watch telly through out the day (2-3 hours) ...

I don't unplug things, but do switch off at the plug. However, I have a freeview box & a dvd player which both come with instructions not to switch them off at the mains. There isn't a power on/off button that turns off the little red standby light. Does anyone know if it will cause any problem...

'There's a rat in my compost what am i gonna do'

Hi there, A friend of mine suspects a rat has taken up residence in her compost bin. Upon lifting the bin she found a large burrowed tunnel and also noticed some of the fruit peelings etc had been nibbled. She assumed it was a rat as it is quite a big hole - although said rat hasn't been spotted. An...
