Re: e-cigarettes

For those not scientifically inclined : LD50 refers to a Dose which will be Lethal for (statistically) 50% of animals exposed to it. Usually expressed as milligrams (mg) or even micrograms (I haven't got a greek mu on my computer) per Kg of bodyweight. Thus an LD50 of 1 mg/Kg is much more deadly tha...

Re: Solar Hot Water

We had hot water panel installed 4 years ago. Cost 4000 euros. Cut our bill from 2000 euros/year to 1000. OK, in winter we sometimes have to put immersion heater on. Installed photoelectric 2 years ago. cost 10 000 euros. FIT gave us 1000 euros last year so effective electric bill ZERO. Hot water pa...

Re: Halogen ovens

Ok, we've had ours for a full year now. Time for a report. Our traditional oven is virtually unused. (just for really big things like the Christmas goose and 6-hour leg of lamb and cakes) Did a roast chicken last Sunday and it was perfect. Just occasional turning, as you would do anyway. While chick...

Halogen ovens

maybe not really eco but seem to be very energy-saving compared to a normal oven. 1300w rather than 2 or 3kw.

Does anyone have any experience of them ?

Re: photovoltaic panels. How to choose

Re: composting-ish

Nikki, we count kitchen waste as green and mix with an approx equal volume of brown (sawdust from local saw mill) the green waste usully adds plenty of moisture. if there is too much then add a bit more brown. Texture is ok if it almost holds together when you squeeze a fistful. (Wear rubber gloves ...

Re: Air-source heat pumps

Coming a bit late to this post. Sorry. We have two ASHDs, both installed about five years ago. The first, for the living room, was self installed - main unit on the outside wall, insulated pipes leading up, through the wall and venting inside at ceiling height. consumes about 1kw when actively heati...

Re: photovoltaic panels. How to choose

We probably could reduce consumption a bit more. Only "seasonality" for us would be on extra lighting. However, we are determined to put in a pv system. What I want to know is how to choose the best/most economic. And how to get the salesperson to give me the relevant information for an in...

Re: photovoltaic panels. How to choose

We are currently consuming 8-10 kWh per day. Solar water heating and wood fired central heating already installed. Cannot get planning permission for more than 4kWhp. So, to get the most bang for my buck I want information on how to compare the different offers the different salespeople are trying t...

photovoltaic panels. How to choose

I'm seriously thinking about installing a 4KW system. How are the efficiencies of the different panels measured ? What units should I be looking at when talking to the salesperson ? Any pertinent questions to pose ?

Any help appreciated
