Re: Using old sterilising powder
Starsan is great - a little goes a long way - but only works as a sanitation/sterilisation agent. It will not clean like VWP or bleach does.

Re: What are you sowing ?
When did this spring thing happen? Snowing today and more snow and cold forecast for next week when we're away on holiday.
Perhaps it is best that I've not actually got on and sown anything yet, even though I've been meaning to sow onion and leeks since January!

Small round courgettes, medium round courgettes, large round courgettes. Perhaps we should have removed all fruit before going away for a week.
Peas is the other thing right now. Purple podded peas and more usual green podded ones from a tall variety.

Re: So I have my treadle!
My mum still has an old Jones treadle machine which I don't think gets much use now but when me and my sisters were growing up was used for all sorts of alterations and garment making. We all were taught the basics of using it though I'm not sure I could remember it now (maybe with some practice). S...

What, if anything are you doing to make sure you're getting true varietal seed? Assuming that is what you're after.

That is now an art to practice, pouring beer without disturbing the sediment in the bottom. It helps if you chill the bottles a little before pouring.

Re: What are you havesting
I found the first of the ripe strawberries when we were down the plot netting them off yesterday. Back home t'other half found a couple of ripe alpine strawberries  She also had a fertle around under one of the early potato plants and found a couple of new spuds that went into our dinner...

Re: corks
Also make sure you've degassed your wine or you'll get some of the CO2 that the yeast creates still in the liquid which comes out when you bottle up. This then causes the corks to push out a bit.

Ours are £25 for about 10m x 18m with £2.50 insurance each. No services on site but the site is only a few years old and we're all still finding our feet with it all.

Re: Battling the elements
I can't offer any advice, other than OJ may be right in his idea of getting lights in the polytunnel. Your description of the conditions you get make me thankful we get much less wild weather - though of course when you're watching things blowing round the allotments and the next weather front is ad...
