Re: I am back

I just came back, too. It does seem a bit quiet.

I am back

I saw the 'ish' link in my bookmarks and realized it has been ages since I was here. Nice to see it's still running and there are a few familiar faces still around. Since I was last on, I managed to get pneumonia. It wasn't covid, though it looked like it, but they tested me multiple times and it ca...

Re: Self Sufficient 2021

We had a bumper crop of peaches. We gave away a whole bunch to our neighbours, froze some for making jam later, and we are still eating them cut up in our porridge in the morning. Also a respectable crop of strawberries. They are into a second crop now, so we get enough every few days to add to the ...

Re: Self Sufficient 2021

Back in January, I was talking about walking the dog for exercise. Well, she died - old age. Now I just have to walk for exercise. I'd love to lose this "muffin top". Strawberries were decent this year. Not a bumper crop, but respectable. The black currants were a bust. We got about two cu...

Re: What is there to get rid of light fluff on black laundry?

I haven't seen the sticky rolls in a long time, but they might still be available somewhere. There are also those "Magic Brushes" that have hairs pointing in one direction. You brush the clothing in the direction indicated by the arrow on the brush, and it lifts line and hair off the fabri...

Re: Supporting the Economy

You folks in the UK have it rough. Businesses here are still running, but we in Nova Scotia have one of the lowest infection rates in the world, so we can get away with it, carefully. But just next door, in Newfoundland, the UK variant got loose and there was uncontrolled spread at a school sports e...

Re: Has this forum died?

On Monday, we got snowed in with about 30-40 cm of snow. We spent all day shovelling and running the snow-blower. And that's not even counting the driveway. Normally, I do it with the snow-blower; it takes four passes to do the full width, and it is 250 m long. But, with it being as deep as it was, ...

Re: Self Sufficient 2021

We are getting a bit of cabin fever here. We go out once a week for essentials, and we are keeping the pantry well-stocked. I go to a weekly yoga class, but that could change at any time. We are doing pretty well for covid cases here - none in our area, and only single digits daily for the whole pro...

You could put wooden cleats across it.

Re: Self Isolation

I do miss hugs and in-person chats. It's just me and my wife here. It's a long walk to our next-door neighbours, and two of the three are immune-compromised, so we have to settle for emailing them. The weekly neighbourhood coffee and chat meetups are of course cancelled. About the only outside conta...

Re: Self Isolation

I'm hanging in, but starting to get cabin fever. Yesterday, my wife and I drove into town for a burger and fries at a drive-through restaurant, just for a treat and an excuse to get out of the house. It wasn't an essential trip, so technically, it was a violation of the state of emergency rules, but...

Re: Self Isolation

I am self-isolating for a couple of weeks. I just had surgery, so I was planning to lay low anyway, but I had to fly home, and I consider sharing an airplane with 150 strangers from who-knows-where to be a high-risk activity. And, at 65, I am considered to be in the high-risk age category. Most peop...

Re: What are you harvesting now?

Strawberries! We have day-neutral strawberry plants, and we harvested half a dozen berries this week. Not enough for a pie, but enough to put on top of our porridge.

Re: What are you harvesting now?

Trees. :( Hurricane Dorian started the harvest for us. Now I have to cut them up and split them for firewood.

Prior to the hurricane, we picked all the peaches that looked edible. We still have a few strawberries from some late-bearing plants. Enough for a berry or two on our morning porridge.

Re: What are you harvesting now?

Black currants. I have been harvesting them for a week or two now, and it looks like they will go on for at least another week. I am looking forward to some home-made black currant jam. Mmmmm!
