Re: NEW - Sept Photo Competition

This weeks harvest

Not overly imaginative but this is the first year with the allotment so actual space to grow stuff in.
The OH and I are feeling very proud of ourselves.

Re: What more can I do in a rented property?

Ah, useful thread for me also due to living in a rented place. I have had to make do with a container garden before I got the allotment but one thing thats useful is buying non-hybrid seeds and then allowing some plants to go to seed thus providing for the next year. You will prob eventually have to...

This seems like the best place to post this...

This may well be an irritatingly frequent post but I would just like to say how lovely its been finding this site and seeing all the chatter between like minded people. I know I am starting to sound soppy, which surprisingly enough isnt really my thing, but for years I have been muddling along, work...

Re: Chickens on leased properties...

Haha glad to know I am not the only one in the boat. Obviously I would get a batch of ex bat but would love a pet silkie or pekin too.. They are just so tame, once knew a blue silkie who would climb on your lap if given the chance and would happily clutch and rear a dozen eggs mixed with ducks, chic...

Chickens on leased properties...

Bit of a random one but as someone who is not a home owner I have to overcome various difficulties with trying to gain an ish lifestyle but there are ways round - eg have an allotment, forage and catch a bit of extra food and start getting imaginative with storage space. One thing I am stumped on is...

Can't remember where I heard them but must have heard them somewhere, possibly some blackadder -

Re: hubby awkward with meals help please

Hey, I'm not sure if this has been suggested but stir frys using spray on oil (reduces the amount you use) and a range of different veggys and if you want, lean meat, can be very tastey. The taste can be varied with herbs and spices and the other benefit is that you can take out your hubbys portion ...

Re: Marrow recipes anyone?

Ah I like these posts I am having the same issues myself! I was planning to make marrow rum from the marrows but still have far too many courgettes.

When blending them for sauces can you use them like you would tomatoes? eg chuck them in with some onion and herbs and hey presto nice base sauce??

Re: Christmas hampers

Ahhh! Some lovely ideas already! I think some more booze in the baskets will be much appreciated and I will definately look out for the chestnuts this year. I tried roasting some last year but was making chutney at the same time so forgot about them and they burnt them to an upalatable chrisp! (Home...

Re: Hello from Reading.

Hello Helen, nice to see there is another Reading bod on here! Do you have an allotment around the area? I have one in Early which unfortunately is one of those chopped in half ones the council starting doing to try and stop people leaving space to go to waste.. I am a little space limited as a resu...

Re: Christmas hampers

Hello, yes I use wicker hampers (I have a stack of old ones that have been cluttering the house for years which I clean and use..) I do ask for them back but most people want to keep then as useful little storage boxes  I am working on making reed baskets but still struggling with the bases so...

Christmas hampers

First proper post so hope I'm doing this right! Being of low means and frankly hating the idea of getting close family and friends generic xmas gifts I have been making hampers for the last few years which have (so far) been a resounding success. Unfortunately I am running out of ideas for new thing...

Hello from Reading.

I have been foraging, allotmenting and doing various things with jams and preserves for a while and thought it might be nice to chatter to like-minding people and maybe get some handy hints. Only had the allotment for a year but been growing veg and herbs out of planters and teeny bits of mud with v...
