Permaculture in the Desert

It's quite an old clip, but very, very interesting anyway.

Re: VAT rise

Additionally, with all this talk in the media of everything going up 2.5%, for the average person (i.e. not a VAT registered business), prices (VAT inclusive) should only increase by 2.15%. You don't add 2.5% onto an already VAT inclusive price. Yeah, yeah - I'm doing my accounts at the moment...zzz...

Re: VAT rise

... With VAT at 20% it does make it easier to work out the net price now, divide by 6, before at 17.5% you had to multiply by 7 and divide by 27, when at 15% it was multiply by 3 divide by 23, so it should save accountants about 3 minutes a week as well. I think you typo'd. At 17.5% it was multiply...

Re: settle in a dog...

Harsh as it sounds, you need to ignore it. If the dog is feeling stressed and is nervous around you or other people, then you must give it space. Put its food down & walk away. Always have the odd treat in your pocket. If the dog comes to you just allow it to sniff - don't rush to pat it etc. Ma...

Re: Rant about waste

You keep your own records here. It's your responsibility to take them with you when you go for appointments and if you lose them it's your own misfortune. It's a good system. If you're particularly concerned about losing them - you make copies and keep them elsewhere. No responsibility on the health...

Last year's swallow thread: http://www.selfsufficientish.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=37&t=13424 It was 18 March last year chez moi! That's pretty strange isn't it - an entire month's difference. I wonder if the swallows that you saw travelled up on different winds perhaps, especially since we're ...

Re: Breadmaker Question. Need Some advice.

Just out of interest, regarding the 'green' thing - my electric oven uses 6 times more kw/h than my bread machine does to bake a loaf. Therefore, I have to bake 6 loaves to break even on energy use. However, it's not as simple as that since there's no way I can fit 6 loaves in the oven...

Re: How best to grow chard?

We grew swiss chard this winter both indoors (polytunnel) & outdoors. With just 18 plants, we've been eating the indoor stuff every week and have given away loads - always by leaf-picking. Since mid-february it has really started to grow rapidly & we can't eat enough of it now! It looks stun...

Re: Breadmaker Question. Need Some advice.

If you get unpredictable results, it could well be that your measurements are out. However carefully you try and measure out 100ml of water - you'll probably vary by as much as 10ml or more depending on the measuring jug. The answer is to weigh it instead. As an experiment, measure out 100ml and the...

Re: Ish Springwatch 2010

Probably a little early still for swallows. I record a load of things each year as they first appear: last year the first swallow was 10th April. The Almond & Apricot blossoms are out now - both produced their first flowers a fortnight later than last year - perhaps a sign of the bad winter. A p...

I don't know about herbs in there, but those walls look absolutely perfect for some stunning espaliers (apples perhaps?) or cordons/fans (pears/peaches). Wow.

Re: No dig gardening in the Northern Hemisphere?

We're pretty hot here (i.e. above 30C and up to 40C during much of July/August) and mulching is absolutely the only way to go. We concentrate on keeping the sun off the soil and it gets a deep water every few days - if required. Even our raspberries love it - although we keep them in a semi-shaded a...

Thanks for that Graham - it's a bit addictive isn't it?! It'll cost me a fortune in books if I'm not careful ;)
