Looking for rabbits

Does anyone in Scotland or in the Midlands keep large breeds of rabbit such as New Zealands, Netherlands or Flemish? I'm looking for either bucks or does to cross with my NZWs for a bigger gene pool.

Thanks, Julie :)

Re: Don't waste heads and feet!

Mixed reaction to this thread, lol, I hate waste but yeuch. I have to have the pigs head face down in the pan, can't have it grinning at me after knowing it - huge guilt trip I'm afraid. I haven't tried this with our own chickens yet but supermarket birds get jointed and the rest of the carcase I pr...

Anyone need NZ White rabbits?

Does anyone in the Aberdeenshire or Moray areas need any replacement breeding stock at the moment? I have some particularly big and nice natured Kits at the moment, mostly does. I also have a small litter from an unrelated pair if anyone wants any breeding stock. Message me if you want any more info...

Re: Rabbit/Goat food

There are a vast array of wild plants you can feed all available at different times of year so you should still be able to find them some sow thistles, grass and plantains. To be honest, whatever the wild rabbits would be eating, so grass and weeds is a very natural diet. You should find the best mi...

Re: Sewing machines

Have you tried asking on freecycle? A lot of very nice older machines are given away this way and the owners just want them to be put to good use. Considering you are asking for advice I'm going to stick my neck out and assume you haven't a lot of experience with different machine brands so it would...

Re: Tudor Monastry Farm

Yep  The Tudor period is one of my favourite, especially as sheep were so important to the whole economy then. The re-enactment team have done some fantastic series but this is my favourite since they did tales from the green valley.

Re: Rabbits and ragwort?

Rhubarb leaves (and the green parts of the stems) contain oxalic acid, so do dock leaves. This is a cumulative poison and it is best to avoid it for rabbits. I don't worry too much if the odd baby dock leaf is in the grass and herbs I cut for mine but never let them eat the bigger leaves or any with...

Re: Rabbit ear mites. Natural remedies

This is something I've never yet come across so, purely in the interests of prevention, can anyone tell me how a rabbit comes by these little passengers? Do they take up residence in the hutch and come out at night like red mites on chickens, come in on the hay/straw, or do they have to pick them up...

Re: Making a smoker

Hubby made a wonderful smoker using a dead larder fridge. It was quite a tall one but that was probably because it was the only one available at the time and if you're going to smoke fish you may as well do a lot eh? He saves any nice wood shavings that he gets hold of - whisky barrels make awesome ...

Re: UK centric Permaculture books

Mamos, have you checked with your local council or other organisations to see if there are any grants available? As you are setting up a community enterprise they may have grants to help it get started. A friend of mine is doing something similar and they get funding from local charities and the cou...

Re: Do you grow animal or chicken food

We have started some Siberian pea trees for the hens to help themselves to from next year hopefully. I'm also leaving one field to grow on as foggage for my small sheep flock.

Re: Any tips to help back ache.

One thing that doesn't seem to have been mentioned, unless I missed it somehow, is taking turmeric several times a day as a natural anti-inflammatory. Not only does it work, it will protect your stomach from the affects of NSAIDs if you are using them. Turmeric has been used in Ayurvedic medicine fo...
