Re: Ex batts versus jack frost
Cider vinegar is more to promote health, as is a clove of garlic - I also put a little rapeseed oil in the water - it can protect a little against frost as it coats the top of the water, but if it is -4 or worse there is not much you can do unless you purchase something like a snuggle pad - a microw...

Re: One chicken not laying - any suggestions why?
Yeah, I think you are being a bit... hey at least the others are laying! I've got a few ex-bats and some rare breeds - 9 in total and atleast 6 are on winter strike!
All you can do is ensure they are wormed as you have done, and water and feed well.
I'm just looking forward to spring again!

Re: Heat lamp
I bought one of these lamps to raise chicks but have never thought about using it for the chickens fully grown - I do however chuck an old duvet over the house during cold spells but as people have said above they do huddle pretty well. I'm just a bit tired of collecting their water every night and ...

Re: Up to date prices for pig food
I grew too many potatoes last year and gave quite a few to my 3 pigs - cooked mind you as they digest them easier! Most of our excess veg went to the hens and pigs - definitely a good way of feeding your animals without wasting anything!

Re: Up to date prices for pig food
Really late in replying to this, sorry! I have been paying £10 per 25kg bag from a nearby Organic farm - this would be the best situation I reckon - just get a nearby good quality producer to add a few bags on to their regular delivery. I used the feeding formula found in 'Get Started in Pig Keeping...

Hello from Wiltshire!
Joined up yesterday - have the need to share my experiences and learn of others as I used to be a city boy but seem to have found myself in the Wiltshire countryside rearing 20 hens, 3 pigs and growing about 2 allotments worth of fruit and veg! Seems like a great forum - already bought a few of the ...

Pigs and the inevitable day they have to go...
Need some advice on the best time to 'harvest' my piggies. :dontknow: I have taken on 3 great not-so-little Gloucester Old Spots - trouble is I have no idea what date I should send them to meet their maker - I'm getting a lot of help from M*rshfi**d Organic but I can't decide when to send them off.....

Re: Reasons why a potato plant would go flop
This has happened to mine too - I'm not sure it is anything to do with watering as I have neglected my crop of golden wonders and they are about 1.5 meters high and really lush. However my second earlies are looking rather yellow and limp and I watered them more than any others. However the potato c...
