Re: Chickens stopped laying!

Ours have stopped too- for about two weeks now. I posted about it on an earlier thread about how they don't want to come out of the coop, but forgot to say they also have stopped laying. We've given them a full health heck, plus wormed and dusted and they look as fit as fiddles, although their combs...

Hens not wanting to come out of coop

The hens haven't wanted to come out of the coop the last two days, they are perching, rather than in nests and broody and I can't see anything in the run that would be scaring them, I've got them out to eat and drink and they look and seem fine, they pootle about a bit...and then go in again. The on...

Daylight and hen laying

Is it true that chickens that are over a year old need 14 hours daylight to resume laying or is it less? We're not early risers, so ours get let out at 7.30, but it's clearly light at six, we have a window in the coop that is blocked for warmth in the winter, but I'm wondering if we unblocked it and...

Re: Chickens and Wild Garlic

I think wild garlic probably will make the eggs slightly garlicky, we sometimes add garlic to drinking water as a natural antibacterial and that flavours the eggs slightly.

Re: Communal Smallholding

This http://www.diggersanddreamers.org.uk/ is the site for intentional communities/communes/co-operatives in the UK. There is info on how to set one up- legal/financial advice etc plus an area where you can advertise for members. Also all the existing communities are listed. Hope this helps.

Re: Does anyone NOT have a television?

What about stopping 'normal' TV and just using BBC iplayer and maybe 4OD that way you watch the good programmes when you want without the mindless channel surfing that lots of people do. We've got a teen and it works for us.

Re: Dinosaur plants

+1 to mares tail it looks like something from the Jurassic era. We gave up our allotment in the end because of it- the area was covered in it and it out competed virtually every other plant. The old boys used to use roundup to chemically nuke it, but we are organic so that wasn't an option, we just ...

The way that making money and owning things has become the new religion encouraged by politicians of every stripe over the past 30 years. We have collectively paid a heavy price, socially, politically and environmentally.

Bloomin' foxes

Very nasty surprise in our garden yesterday- I saw a suspicious mound and being a bit wossie got DH to have a dig and lo and behold it was the partial carcass of next doors chicken that had been grabbed by a fox about a month ago :pukeright: I hadn't noticed the hump until I'd cut back some vegetati...

Re: Bugs in the chook house (again)!!

I'm no expert on this but sounds like they may be red mite, before they've fed :pukeright: Size wise they are tiny and although I've read they're not meant to crawl onto us, I have heard of this happening, and then infesting houses so I'd sort this out asap. DE seems to work for us and I add lavende...

Orpington moult

Our Orpington bantam is moulting heavily. Turns out orpies are quite small underneath all the fluff and feathers! Anyway my question and concern is she's taking quite a bit of time to moult and I'm concerned she won't grow her feathers back in time before winter sets in. I've heard it's going to be ...
