Growing Sweet Potatoes in the UK

I've just been todying out my box where potatoes and onions live and found 2 bags of sweet potatoes that have sprouted. Just shows how often I do that. Ayway, I'm prettty sure I can grow them in the UK, but it is still cold out there. Should I put them in growbags in the garage? Outside? Leav...

Re: Pumpkins perishing

I'm really impressed Tosca. I'll have to give that some thought. I'm very jealous though. We would make our way through that lot easily, there are five of us and we love pumpkins and squashes.

Pumpkins perishing

Please help me solve this mystery. I'm growing pumpkins, butternut squash and courgettes amongst my sweetcorn. They've all been growing well but oops I gave them some tomato feed and got lots of flowers. I've got quite a few butternut squash growing but only 1! Pumpkin. The other 2 pumpkins had frui...

Strawberry runners

I have 36 strawberry plant. Some summer and some perpetual. They appear to be producing runners. All I know is that in this first year is that I am supposed to remove them so the plants fruit more/better. I've cut a few off with scissors but am now really worried if I've done it right. Also do I jus...

Re: Best garden veg

Are any of them likely to be around in the winter? I know the sages will be. Thanks.
Will be checking out your list in more detail later. Ilve never heard of orach before or rat's tail radish.

Best garden veg

Hi All,

I want to make all my borders edible. What would your suggestions be for a aesthetically pleasing yet edible border in the garden?

Thanks,

Karen

Pole beans

I have been very lucky with my bean seeds and they all came through, I transplanted 2 plants per pole but with hindsight I wonder if they will smother each other. Do I just let them get on with it or do I lose the weaker one? It seems so wasteful. I've got Cosse Violet French? and Czar runners. Than...

Yellow pumpkins

Hi, I've been growing a Marina de Chiogga pumpkin. To ensure the fruits were pollinated I hand pollinated the female flowers with male flowers. Two pumpkins are doing really well. The rest started going yellow and then mushy shortly after flowering. Then I noticed some of the tiny fruits were going ...

When to sow mustard green manure

Hi helpful people. We're just eating our first potatoes from our allotment. Highland burgundy ones. Anyway, the remainder is in the ground. The foliage had died off so I had cut it back last week. So do I leave them there or do I dig them up and store them? Do I put our chickenpoop from on first and...

Re: Paths between raised beds

Great info, thank you. Will check out my local tree surgeon. Regarding the membrane, how will I know it is the best? Is it determined by weight? Density?

Paths between raised beds

Just wanted your opinions. I have paths between my raised beds but as yet not covered the paths yet. What would you suggest. I had initially thought a weed membrane and wood hip but then I saw this coconut husk stuff. Preferably durable and childproof and friendly

Re: how long should/did you breastfeed for?

When I was pregnant I honestly didn't realise that you were still supposed to bf past 6 months. Looking back I was very badly informed. Breastfeeding is not the best. It is normal standard nutrition. There is nothing 'special' about it. It's just that the substitutes don't have a patch on it. I bf a...
