Re: National ZERO Waste week. 2nd to 8th September 2013

I think this is really interesting. I've been giving it some thought, and would definitely like to attempt it. At the moment though, I can see a few things that I think I will probably still have to put in the bin: things like used cat litter, used cotton wool (make up removal - yes, I know I could ...

Re: Self-sufficientish wedding confetti

I may be wrong, but I seem to remember reading somewhere that rice isn't especially wildlife-friendly. I think often birds eat it and because it's uncooked it can make them ill (I may be remembering this wrongly though). Uller - thanks for the warning! Did your cousin buy her dried petal confetti? I...

Self-sufficientish wedding confetti

Hello all, It's been a little while since I posted here, but having settled in a new house I've been setting up the vegetable patch, composter etc. all over again. I wanted to share a simple way of making natural petal wedding confetti. I'm getting married next year and am trying to cut down on the ...

Re: Hi from '1940s' Cornwall

Thanks very much chilitony - I'll probably be in touch with questions at some point!

Indy, I haven't tried the mock duck yet but have just made an apple charlotte using a wartime recipe and it's delicious (if I do say so myself)!

Re: What are you havesting

Your peas are way ahead of mine! But I have a couple of very small mangetout. I think my first potatoes are almost ready to be harvested - is it always the case that you wait for them to flower and then they're done?

Re: Food prices to double

I seem to remember reading somewhere that the western world wastes enough food each year to feed the rest of the world. So in theory, we could all slim down and that might go some way towards balancing out population growth - but easier said than done!

Re: Food prices to double

No, of course incomes won't have stayed static but I doubt that both cost and income will have doubled in equal measures. There's no way of knowing whether this report has taken that into account too - it may have done.

Re: Food prices to double

Yes Odsox I think you're right. I know it's expensive, but if every country returned to mainly providing for itself where possible, as we once did many years ago, things would be far more straightforward in the long run. As a nation we'd probably be poorer, but far more self-supporting. I know that ...

Re: What are you havesting

Not much being harvested here... just herbs - sage, basil (indoors), thyme - and lettuce, rocket and radishes. But this is my first year of growing a proper selection of food so I haven't got any crops that were planted last year.

Food prices to double

According to an Oxfam report discussed by the BBC today, food prices could double by 2030. The main causes seem to be climate change, spiralling food prices and lack of land. Looks like there's never been a better time to try and grow our own food!

Re: shreaded paper for the chooks???

A bit off-topic, but I use shredded paper in my wormery as it provides insulation when it's cold but is also a food for the worms.
