Carrots...woody core

Hi folks, After lifting a few baby carrots/thinnings a couple of weeks ago (all of which were delicious) I decided to lift my first real batch today. Some were reasonable size, others were a bit small.....however before cooking some were a bit difficult to cut and even after cooking as normal about ...

Re: Spraying Spuds

... read that a horsetail tea works well against blight. Has anybody tried this successfully? Hi garye I have heard this too, and also that it must be re applied after rain Aye, apply when it's dry and then re-apply after rain - if it works then at least it would stop me being so pissed off at havi...

Re: Spraying Spuds

Hi folks, Had a wee touch of blight on my first earlies last year but this was end July and I cut the stalks down, left them in the ground and harvested them over the next few weeks. They were fine. This year though I've planted some main croppers as well and had read that a horsetail tea works well...

Re: how are your spuds doing?

I had some in two small beds in the Polytunnel and one larger bed outside. Polytunnel ones varied from really disappointing (ie. 2 tatties per plant) to a bit better (ie 5-6 tatties per plant). Outside ones are much better - best one so far had 13 tubors and weighed in at over 4lbs. All were earlies...

Re: Gooseberries

Rather than start a whole new thread can I pose another question. We bought two bushes earlier in the year (one green one red ) and the green one now looks very, very unhealthy. All the leaves are gone, as is it's fruit. Hope i haven't killed the bloody thing! It's in a fairly big pot and seemed fin...

Re: 2 Hen questions

Doh! Got to my supplier early this aft (with my 20 month old, 4 year old and 6 year old in tow expectantly hoping to be coming home with chicks) only to find that all of their chicks had gone - the last three speckeldies went this morning! So we came home with 2 POL pullets - one Isa Brown and one R...

Re: 2 Hen questions

Thanks folks, I do tend to err on the side of cooking a bit much rather than too little when doing rice or pasta so from now on the hens will be the benficiaries!

2 Hen questions

First question:- We're planning to add to our pair of hens and one of our local suppliers has Speckeldy and Bluebell chicks for sale Anybody any experience of these breeds at all? Secondly, I was reading through a book the other night and the author ( famous gardeny person who shall remain nameless)...

Hi Folks

Been reading these boards for w hile now but haven't got round to registering/posting. Anyway, we moved to our current house in Ayrshire about 2 years ago. We had a reasonably big hen enclosure at our old place but it was rubbish for veg growing - too shady. Our new place has got a big back garden b...
