My fledgling veggie garden finally started to take shape today  The boys & I scouted around Grandad's old shed and scavenged wood and stuff to build a raised bed which we filled with the multitudinous bags of compost that seem to have been hanging around the garden for ages. Then we bui...

I feel quite proud of myself as this didn't freak me out in any way, shape or form! I've never eaten the head of anything and even though I do like my offal, I think the head would be a step beyond my foodie comfort zone - unless I was really hungry or I could smell it cooking  . Can't do heart...

I never sign up for anything on the street or over the phone. I hate the way I am made to feel guilty for NOT signing up and I really resent that. It tends to feel like my choices of charity are being judged as irrelevant when I decline to sign on the dotted line. I know that charities have to be pr...

The tobacco thing works but don't be tempted to use it in an enclosed space. My old horticultural tutor at college told a tale of using tobacco in a glasshouse in his early days as a trainee gardener. He collapsed with nicotine poisoning....

School closed for snow!

Isn't it funny how the whole place grinds to a standstill for a few inches of snow...

The boys are looking forward to a revised curriculum today. I think it'll be a crash course in the structure and stability of snowmen followed by snow-angel art!

Darn - missed it :(

We saw her a couple of years ago at Althorp and she was wonderful live. Very, very shy and unsure of herself when she's not actually singing though.

If you like her stuff then Amos Lee is worth checking out too.

Has anyone got a recipe for malt loaf?

I gave in to a craving for soreen malt loaf in the co-op the other day and thoroughly enjoyed it. The number of 'extra' ingredients got me wondering whether anyone made their own and if they did, can I have the recipe please?
