not far away then is the field over grown or short? We can get together soon and have a bit of sport.
It's overgrown, we've pretty much ignored it until now :)

Re: ferreting and rabbiting {CAUTION - PHOTOS}
I'd definitely be interested in learning from you, we're just outside Peterborough in Ramsey and have a field that's heaving with rabbits :)

Sheep or Pigs?
We're doing ok with the growing veg and keeping chickens for eggs, and I've bagged a few rabbits for the pot. Now I'm hoping that next year we can expand to a couple of larger animals for meat. We've got about an acre of currently unused land - is that likely to be enough? I like the idea of sheep a...

The bit that I don't get is why is this one child so much more important than all the other missing children. I mean, I have every sympathy for her family and everything, but she isn't the only child who has gone missing, why is she the only one the media care about? Why don't the others have massiv...

Rowan
I keep seeing rowan trees laden with berries all over the place.
I've already made a few jars of rowan jelly, but it's not something we'll use in any great quantity so I was wondering if anyone had any other suggestions of ways to use rowan berries.
Seems such a shame to waste them

You can do most anything with elderberries that you'd do with blackberries or grapes. (I'm sure I red somewhere that they are chemically very close to grapes). There's no reason at all why you can't make sweet elderberry dishes - I often use them in crumbles and suchlike, usually with apple cos the ...

When we went for our first look around we had the rules explained. Our site gets inspected every six weeks. If it's not being worked you get a warning letter, if you've not rectified the situation by the next inspection you get a second warning, if it gets to the third inspection your're out. They s...

I've made vinegar from wine before, in some cases it's a better option than drinking the homebrew. The apple cores/peel method just seemed simpler - I can't see why it wouldn't work - if you leave fruit out it starts to ferment naturally anyway and the cider vinegar presumably acts as the mother to ...

Vinegary isn't a good sign - it usually means the wine has started to oxidise and that's not fixable so far as I know. Don't throw it away though, turn it into proper vinegar. Just add a bit of cider vinegar, leave for a couple of weeks during which time it will gradually get stronger, When it reach...

I got my allotment about a week ago so am in much the same position - although with nettles instead of brambles. Current plan is to make a couple of small beds at the front now where I'll plant winter stuff - I've got some onion sets, some garlic and I'm planning on broad beans and hopefully some sp...

Marigolds
Not the rubber gloves! Another things I noted from Mum's book was that Pot Marigold (the common garden plant) used to be considered an edible herb, although the leaves are a bit on the bitter side. I've used the flower petals in salads before, but the book also notes that if you dry the petals you c...

Vinegar
Has anyone had any success with making their own vinegar? I love making chutneys and pickles so get through loads of the stuff and it's by far the most expensive part of the recipe. According to an old book of my mum's you can make vinegar just by collecting apple cores and peelings in a jar, coveri...
