Re: "Army"dillos

This thread is making me chortle. I have nothing against armadillos, but then I haven't got them rooting up my veg patch as they are not too common here in Devon. I LOVE Dime bars, though. Yeah, I think they are of Scandinavian origin. And Harry Enfield. Who is not of Scandinavian origin. Thanks for...

Re: Growing Wild Garlic

Thanks everybody, I will give it a whirl. I think the flowers I have already picked are a bit young but there's plenty more where they came from at the moment... (sorry for rubbing it in MMM and Henwoman!!!)

Re: Growing Wild Garlic

Thanks for the advice, Dunc and the kind offer Boboff!! Not too concerned about the invasiveness of it as we don't really have that much in the way of shady damp bits (!). Just wondered if the flowers I have would be too immature to harvest seed from and what I need to do to the seeds if anything......

Growing Wild Garlic

I ask this as a novice gardener and forager... would it be possible to use wild garlic flowers to grow my own wild garlic from seed, and if so what's the best way to go about it? Or do you have to dig it up (I know there are laws concerning this!!)? I picked some earlier along with a few flowers. We...

Re: Make your own sourdough

Me? Impatient???! Er, yes, probably Maggie... I suppose I just abandoned it at the first hurdle because it DIDN'T taste nice and the texture was dreadful too - really heavy but not in a good way. I like a good heavy loaf of wholemeal bread but this just wasn't pleasant so I thought 'life's too short...

Re: Make your own sourdough

I have to say Graham, I did this and still no joy!! Not sure what happened really though I do remember the starter kept separating. I read at the time (last Summer) that this wasn't a problem but maybe this advice (from that all knowing and always truth speaking entity 'The Internet') was a lot of r...

Re: Make your own sourdough

You have inspired me to have another go at this... I make my own bread usually and did have a bash at sourdough bread last year but the results were disappointing - very heavy loaves with no air bubbles at all. I must have done something wrong because I know how good sourdough bread can be. I love t...

Re: Incubating without an incubator?!

Ooh I say. Can't think how you'd do it without, well breaking the eggs. The old Zumba class would be right out of the window...

Re: Incubating without an incubator?!

Thanks Becks - just checked out that link and it's great. I've just shoved a thermometer under the stove so I'll see what it says and maybe get some eggs under there soon...

Re: Incubating without an incubator?!

Ha ha! Lucky old Sammy eh?! Thanks Fi - may well have another go if they go off the whole broody idea again... Just slightly tricky to judge when and if they have given up on the eggs or just stretching their legs... I suppose a couple of hours might be okay? I did hear the other day that goose eggs...

Incubating without an incubator?!

Hello folks. Just a thought... Recently one of our young bantams went broody and diligently sat on her clutch of eggs for two weeks... and then got bored of it and gave up. My OH reckons that we should have tried bringing them inside and keeping them under our oil fired stove, in an attempt to hatch...

Re: Anyone know of good home smoking builds?

Well, we haven't done it yet but are planning to build a simple smoker with an oak barrel (just bought one from local garden/DIY type place - sold as a water butt!), and attach it to some kind of wood burning stove with a length of air conditioning type duct. I think we'll have to put hooks in the l...

Thank you all - Posh vinegar it is then. I shall rebottle it. (When I wrote it I did think "is that a really stupid question?", and it seems that on balance yes it was!!)

Urgent! I need something to pickle quick!

Hello folks. I have just pickled 22 eggs. I am all out of eggs but now find that the recipe I have followed for the pickling liquor has left me with at least a litre of the stuff left over. No idea why they specified why I had to make so much, as what I've used more than adequately covers me eggs. S...

Re: Auvergne Garlic

Ooh, interesting... I will look this up (if I can be bothered). I think I might be getting mixed up actually - I bought some garlic recently from Lidl of all places which was one clove per bulb. It was Spanish I think, and also very good, but pretty green... The Scottish stuff was definitely green b...
