Campden tablets for fruit preserving

Has anyone tried preserving fruit using Campden tablets? This was the original purpose of them. They were originally known as "Campden fruit preserving tablets".

Re: Open a kilner jar of bottled fruit

I do have some of the spring clip lid ones but they are full of relish! The other type have a glass lid with a rubber sealing ring plus a locking ring or a metal disc lid with a locking ring. A vaccum or low pressure forms inside the jar during bottling thus sealing it, but the lid or disc has nothi...

Re: Open a kilner jar of bottled fruit

The vintage ones don't have a tab, it would obstruct the locking ring I did try running it under a hot tap but it didn't budge. The only thing I can think of is to take the locking ring off and then stand the jar in hot water to increase the pressure inside. I have alot of vintage jars frm clearing ...

Open a kilner jar of bottled fruit

The jars I am thinking of are the vintage ones with glass lids and rubber sealing rings with a metal or plastic locking ring although I expect the same problem would happen with modern jars When the fruit is bottled a vaccum is formed so when the locking ring is removed the whole jar can be picked u...

Re: What to bottle first?

Following a modest win on the premium bonds I decided to treat myself to the Dummies book. It'll make good reading when planning the allotment as I can include ability to store stuff in selecting what to plant this year.

perhaps it'll have some ideas about what to do with all those courgettes.....

Re: What to bottle first?

Are you the person who mentioned The Radiation Cookbook? I think I've found the same one at my mother's hosue which I am clearing now she has moved to a care home. That's where the Kilner jars came from. I remembered them from the early 1960s and was astonished to find them in a variety of locations...

What to bottle first?

I have acquired a large number of Kilner jars of almost every variant along with a large metal stock pot to use as a water bath and I'm keen to learn how to bottle food. The thing is what is the easiest thing to bottle? I am thinking of trying apples since I like them and possibly raspberries in the...

Re: Capacity of Kilner jars

Well I did a more accurate measurement today and found that the smaller ones hold 800mL and the larger ones hold 1.1L A standard 1lb jam jar seems to be 378mL which means that the 800mL jars work out at just over 2lb and the 1.1L at just over 3lb which would fit with the possible sizes available for...

Preserving red and yellow peppers

HI,
Can people recommend a good way of preserving read and yellow peppers? The idea is to buy stocks in the summer for some of our favourite dishes and then use them in the winter. I don't have a greenhouse so I can't grow my own

Capacity of Kilner jars

Hi, I have a selection of Kilner jars found in my parents garage. These are pretty old as I remember them as beng old in the 1960s. Anyway the KilnerMan bloke has been helpful in identifying the correct size of sealing ring but I am still left pluzzling over the capacity. Vintage jars seem to be siz...

Washing horticultural fleece

I have been growing lettuce under fleece over the winter. It has got rather mucky and I was wondering if anyone can give advice n washing it. Has anyone done this, does it work and is any particular method or type of detergent recommended.
