I'd buy a village (you could do that here with that kind of cash) and set up a self-sufficient(ish) comunity something along the lines of Mainaleda in Spain.diggernotdreamer wrote:If you won this kind of money, what would you do with it and would you and your partner agree on how to spend it

Re: cordial into champagne, now I'm stuck !
I think if you taste it you should be able to work out if it started and died, or didn't start at all. If it did start, it should taste pretty dry by now. And there's nothing wrong with cloudy! :D I've never heard of using Marmite - does it leave any after-taste? Elderflower cordial is made in my vi...

Re: cordial into champagne, now I'm stuck !
Only guessing here as I've never made champagne, but I suppose you added some yeast and now it's fermented out and the yeast has settled into a sediment at the bottom. I think you probably need to prime the bottles first by adding a little sugar to them before you rack the elderflower into them. Dor...

Re: Sweetening cider before bottling
Hi, If you have another bucket, you could rack the cider off the lees into the new bucket and sweeten it there. You can add sugar to the bottles but it's a lot easier in a second bucket because you know that you'll end up with a consistent product. It's also a lot easier to add one large quantity of...

Re: Mixing pressed apple juice and shop apple juice
Hey there, When you say fermentation vessel are you talking about a plastic brew bucket? If so, you don't need to fill that up. In fact, because the initial fermentation will be a bit hectic, it's good to only fill it about 75% so you don't get a sticky mess on the floor if it bubbles over. Same app...

Re: Finished already?
1.3kg of sugar in 1 gallon should give you an OG of about 1.107. With an FG of 0.990, that's already about 15% abv! Then of course there were some fermentables in the juice initially. It's more or less impossible to tell how much sugar the original mix of juices had in it but it seems to me most of ...

With an SG of 990 I'd say it's probably finished. What was the OG?

Re: What do Badgers NOT eat???
Like regular lard, but from badgers instead of pigs. You make a kind of tea with it, adding honey to sweeten it, or mix it with hot milk. Apparently it's good for TB, pneumonia, bronchitis, broncho-pneumonia, asthmatic conditions, as an ointment for burns, bullet wounds, frost bite, ulcers, herpes, ...

Or turning the situation around a bit, in these here wild parts, badger's lard is considered a great cure for various respiratory problems.

Re: What do Badgers NOT eat???
Corn is one of the badger's favourite meals. The even do some kind of trick where one will use the back of another to get a better grip to flatten down the corn stem to get at it. Not a problem in the UK especially but apparently they like grapes too.

Re: Just ordered a wood burner.
Looks like the same one (the one you have upstairs). It's only ₤100 in Dedeman so thinking of getting one for the utility room downstairs as it'd be handy to have one which heats up quickly like these metals tend to do. Also could use another one upstairs so I can have guests in winter, but I'll get...

Re: Thrifty furniture
Unfortunately we don't have hens as we don't live up at the house full time yet (hard to find employment in the area) so mostly I'm focusing on renovations and getting the garden into shape at the moment. Hens are definitely on the agenda in the long term though.

Re: Just ordered a wood burner.
Snap, we've just bought two. One for downstairs with an oven, and one to heat the spare room where we do crafting and to keep the rest of the upstairs above freezing. The Prity factory is just down the road so the two only cost about £400. But we had to collect them which was interesting, a middle ...
