Knitting one's own yogurt... problems?!

I'm unsure if they're problems or to be expected. 1. I am using UHT lactose free milk, semi skimmed. 2. I am using a started of a lactose free bio yogurt. I heated the milk right, mixed in the culture, poured into a pre warmed wide neck flask. the thing is, it's coming out like grains in whey; I dra...

greenhouse tomatoes... pollination?

I know they self pollinate and I can increase yields by tapping the canes occasionally when they're in flower, but can I cross pollinate a yellow (golden sunrise) to a red plum (san marzano) and create a hybrid of utter deliciousness?!

Re: I'm sure that's not the point

so many people seem to think you're better off without a water meter and it's just not true. on estimated bills we were on £80 a month for just water, and another £21 for sewerage. We requested a meter (landlord all for it, water company shocked) and our bills dropped to under £30 per month for BOTH...

Re: New Project :-)

awww! this is a great idea! two of my home ed friends (both seasoned chicken keepers) are brooding chicks right now, partly because they want more chickens and partly because it's a very good teaching experience for their kids, I think it's a lovely idea!

Re: Home ed or not?

to be honest, I think a relaxed and happy atmosphere with a better teacher to child ratio than a standard school is the best thing. For me, that's home ed. I seem to get far more actual life-valuable stuff (probably a better way of phrasing that...) out of sophie than school did. she can now read th...

Re: Home ed or not?

We just happen to be an HE family. you're also not alone in having poeple tell you what you should do, what's right etc. what's right for you is not necessarily right for anyone else so you know what? stuff them!!! get yourself o...

Crap from my guttering

our guttering got cleared out earlier by my lovely hubby... he's saved the bucket of stuff he dug out, you know, just in case his mad wife wants it for something. he's awesome like that.
So... can I use this as mulch? or compost? it looks like lovely stuff lol.

Re: Veganism not an option any more

I wondered if there were any tribes of people that had to be vegan, not people who were on religious or ethical grounds I doubt that. There is always edible bugs around for protein in a foraging diet, even if they're not catching animals for meat. There are tribes of people who don't keep animals f...
