Re: Anyone know what these are?

Thanks. Guess I won't be making wine out of them, then!

Re: can't identify a fish!!Help please!!

Look like minnows. When I was a kid (Midlands) I caught lots of them and put them in a pond. They can grow to 5 inch, though I don't ever recall any white spots on any of them.

Re: What i'm brewing at the moment

Right now, 80 litre of plum rakia. I have not tried making wine, but I have two elderberry trees laden with fruit that are begging me to give it a try. Hi Pach! In your Neck of the woods doesn't Rakia refer to brandy? Just to point out to Isher's that a good number of countries around where Pach is...

Re: a bucket full of peaches....wine?

Yes and yes. The stones don't matter a monkey's hoot. Some people get paranoid about cyanide content, but there's less in there than in apple pips. If you leave the stones in for a couple of months, you may (just MAY) end up with a very slight almond flavour - not necessarily a bad thing. But it's ...

Re: a bucket full of peaches....wine?

I have fermented peaches without adding yeast, I think you would need to keep skins though.

Re: Marrow

I grew quite a few this year as the yield is so good. Totally sick of them; there's only so much marrow stew, curry, soup, pickle a person can take. Even the dogs hardly touch them any more.

Re: Moving country to be self sufficient

We moved to Bulgaria from UK three years ago. We had no connections here, so was a little scary, but it turned out to be far easier than we imagined. Bulgarians are wonderful people, very welcoming and helpful, and houses are ridiculously cheap, you can get a cottage with acre of land for 5000 euro,...

Re: 'Wild' yellow Plums !!

There are many of these growing wild in Bulgaria, the fruit is yellow, not much bigger than cherries. They are often used to make rakia.

Re: Herbs

Flat parsley and curly, mint, spearmint, thyme (grows like crazy), lavender, lemon balm, coriander, bay, garlic, chives, oregano, rosemary, cat mint, dill. Ginger, well, maybe, just an experiment. Nobody else mentioned dill. Fresh dill in salads is wonderful.

I have grown chickpeas but the yield is quite low, lentils similar. I not sure it's worth the trouble.

Re: How many sweet corn cobs per plant?

I have noticed some people here grow corn and potatoes close together, alternate rows about 10 inch apart. Does anyone know reason for this?

Re: What are you havesting

Potatoes, carrots, tomatoes, chillis, onions, okra, far too many courgettes, some strange courgette/pumpkin things, plums, apricots, peaches, mullberries, various herbs. Last of beetroot/beans. Also purslane (I used to pull this up when weeding). Heat wave seems to have killed off corn and cucumber,...
