Re: Ferns!Help!!!!!
Well the type is important as there are tender ones. They are perennial (mostly) so they will die back naturally. You could overwinter them in the pots in a cool place but keep the soil damp (not wet) They obviously wont need light whilst dormant either. Just check the compost once a week. If you wa...

Re: Rhubarb
Next to nothing can be grown near rhodies, altho probably not as toxic to other flora as people might think but.... There is some evidence for allelopathic interactions (the production of adverse effects on other species) between Rhododendron and other plants. This may include the inhibition of germ...

Re: Can you recommend a good climber
Off the cuff there are a few lonicera (honeysuckle) that are evergreen and smell good and are easily found on the web. With climbers its a good idea to buy the right plant for the right place, that is generally speaking you can find dwarf varieties of whatever rather than going for say a full blown ...

Re: Rhubarb advice needed
Do it whilst the plant is dormant from november to march ish. You can pare the crown down (split with a spade) to 4 or 5 buds every 5 years and replant the ones you've taken off in well fertilised holes As oldjerry said leave the first years crop to let the crown develop.

Check out using tansy if you want a natural way to keep em at bay and I'm pretty sure it can be found in your part of the world. There's probably a recipe for a solution somewhere on the net.... http://montana.plant-life.org/species/tanacet_vulgare.htm http://www.ehow.com/facts_7527175_tansy-flea-tr...

This is a very toxic plant and as has been said it is cumulative. I would not let any animal of mine eat it.

Re: Cutting back hardy herbs ???
Another way you can regenerate woody herbs when they get leggy such as rosemary and lavender is to bury (layer) them. Not so easy in a barrel but still do-able. Take your cuttings as a back up, but you may be able to pin branches down at or just below soil level in a spiral fashion and if you have e...

Re: Begonia
Begonias can take a while depending on the variety but they need to be planted very high so the surface or your new shoots are just above the level of the compost. They can be prone to rotting and so the depression in the top of the corm should not be allowed to fill with water for this reason. Also...

Re: Burnt? Runner bean plants
Did they have brown spots first? It could be bean blight which is quite common and much to my annoyance can persist in the seed. My two Hyacinth beans have it and I've never grown them before so it can only have come through the seed. This will give you more info... http://www.ext.colostate.edu/pubs...
