Aye, pretty much the same here! If I was living on what I produce I'd be halfway through the local rabbit population by now!

Re: Newbie looking at move to Ireland

Hi Defino, From my limited experience of making stuff to sell, I would suggest identifying things that people want, not what you think they want. Otherwise you might end up spending lots of time trying to sell something that people aren't keen on forking out cash for! I used to make honey and it sol...

Re: How are your tomatoes this year?

Glad to hear it's not just mine! Green aura - yes I use the tomatoes on the windowsill with a banana trick too. I even tried putting a bunch in my greenhouse with limited success! Digger - I grew a few heirloom varieties and some common ones. All are just as under ripe. I even had one called Scotlan...

Re: I'm just back from a lunchtime foray...

Hey I did pretty good! Sorry to make you jealous, fungi! I have found a cracking little wood close to my work though and it's full of mushrooms! I'll have a taste of the beefsteak tomorrow and see how I like it. The porcelain fungi were growing on beech. You're right, it is a false death cap! I reme...

Re: can't identify a fish!!Help please!!

If you are referring to the photo in lycia's post these are definitely not juvenile salmonids. I work with these things daily and that's definitely not what they are. There's no parr marks along the sides for a start. If I have missed another photo (my browser is quite old and has a tendency to omi...

I'm just back from a lunchtime foray...

And this is what I came back with. Can you help me to identify them please? 1. Pretty sure this is a beefsteak fungus: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v718/adamaki/Mushrooms/IMAG0450_2_zps9d357b0f.jpg If it is then I'll be having it for my tea! 2. There were plenty of these growing up through the ...

How are your tomatoes this year?

Just wondering how everyone else got on growing tomatoes this year, with the awful wet summer. In previous years I've grown mine outside, but being in Scotland they've never got past a few green tomatoes before the weather turns. This year I had a new greenhouse and filled half of it with tomatoes. ...

Yup, worst year ever for tomatoes, thanks to the appalling weather in the UK this summer! Very disappointing seeing as it was my first year with my new greenhouse :(

Re: can't identify a fish!!Help please!!

Did you find out what they are yet? They're an unusual colour but they look like juvenile salmonids to me. The large pectoral fins give it away. Do they have an adipose fin (small fleshy lobe between the dorsal and tail fin)? If they do they're definitely salmonids and not cyprinids.

Re: I found Paw Paw, and you can too

Where abouts are you? I don't think I'll be finding any in the UK! I used to live in South Africa and they grew like weeds, but the fruit from the wild ones smelled like vomit and didn't taste much better! I think I'll stick to the cultivated ones!

Re: Rose Hips

Has anyone noticed if there are any sloes in their area, we have none at all this year, have looked everywhere, must have been the strange weather earlier on in the year, all my little apples fell off as well :( Lyn We have tons of blackthorn here around the Stirling area, but nearly all are devoid...

Re: Elderberries!!

Should be a cracker year for elderberry wine!!! It's going to be the worst year I've ever seen for elderberries here in Scotland :( With all that rain in July with the Jet Stream in the wrong place all the flowers rotted on the trees. At best there's about a 10th of the usual amount of berries on e...

Re: ID confirmation

George - I did try to post the photos in the thread initially, but the images were too big and it wouldn't let me post them, so unfortunately I had to resort to links. If I have time I will resize my photos in future. Garry - No worries, I understand why you wouldn't want to recommend someone eating...

Re: ID confirmation

Hi Garry, Thanks very much for the advice. In answer to your comments: 1. Glad to have this one confirmed. I was pretty sure so had a little nibble. Unfortunately it was quite an old specimen and full of maggots! I'm still on the look out for another of these for supper. 2. Glad to hear you think it...
