Re: Hello from Lancaster!

Hi there. We don't drink much but drink is incredibly cheap out here if we did and there is a co-operative in the village where you can take fruit for processing. Added to that we are regularly given rakia and wine by the neighbours so our booze bill is nil. Other than that, in our first full year o...

Re: to transplant or not to transplant

I would do the latter. I don't bother thinning carrots until they are big enough to go with peas, and generally they will push each other out of the way and you harvest from the middle to give the others room to grow. If you transplant you risk deformed roots and carrot fly attack. I try to only han...

Re: Satisfaction.

I know exactly what you mean. I have been picking herbs and lettuce for a while now, but the other day a simple lunch gave me that sense of satisfaction. We had frittata with herbs, (parsley, chervil, thyme and rosemary) wet garlic, weedy onions, cheddar given to us by a friend (not easy to get out ...

Re: Breeding Ducks/Chickens for selling

One of my bantams has just hatched out two ducklings behind a bag of wood in the barn. I checked them about a hour after they had hatched and one had come out from under the hen and died. I had this happen with a bantam chick last year, and since learning CPR put my training into practice, with the...

Re: Breeding Ducks/Chickens for selling

Even if you don't make much money it's very rewarding just watching the chicks hatch and grow, I love it. I agree, it is rewarding and we have done it for a year now. But we are seriously thinking of making the latest hatch the last. We have rare Bulgarian chooks which are lovely, but small for a d...

Re: Poultruy heat lamps

Here in Bulgaria they use a chrome backed heat bulb like the ones you see over food service counters to keep food warm. Not that cheap to run and you have to make sure it is far enough away so that you don't roast your birds, but they need enough room so that they can choose how warm to be. Luckily ...

Rhubarb here too, plus more herbs and lettuce and chard. Would love to have wild garlic and did bring some with me from my sister's garden, but we can buy packs of it in the supermarket here and had some mixed with chard for lunch.

Re: Hi from North Bucks.

Hi and welcome. It is surprising how much you can grow in a small area and very rewarding no matter how small the quantity. We had a tiny garden in the UK and had three chickens and grew an amazing amount for the space, making sure not to grow anything that was really cheap to buy or we didn't reall...
